A. Paris captivated psychological thriller readers everywhere with Behind Closed Doors. Now she invites you into another home full of heart-pounding secrets, in The Guest. Some secrets never leave. Iris and Gabriel have just arrived home from a make-or-break holiday. But a shock awaits them. One of their closest friends, Laure, is in their house. The atmosphere quickly becomes tense as she oversteps again and again: sleeping in their bed, wearing Iris’ clothes, even rearranging the furniture. Laure has walked out on her husband—and their good friend—Pierre, over his confession of an affair and a secret child. Iris and Gabriel want to be supportive of their friends, but as Laure’s mood becomes increasingly unpredictable, her presence takes its toll. Iris and Gabriel’s only respite comes in the form of a couple new to town. But with them comes their gardener, who has a checkered past. Soon, secrets from all their pasts will unravel, some more dangerous than they could have known. The Guest by B.A. Paris is a thriller read that falls into the domestic drama side of suspense. The story in The Guest is one that is told from multiple points of view. Iris and Gabriel are a married couple who have been on vacation only to return home to find that a friend of theirs has moved into their home while they were gone. Laure and her husband Pierre have always been good friends but Laure has left Pierre after finding he has had an affair. Iris and Gabriel find themselves caught up in helping their friend in her time of need despite not inviting her themselves. The couple however quickly begins to want their home back to themselves as Laure begins to overstay her welcome. I’ve been a longtime fan of B.A. Paris and her novels always quickly devouring each new read as they come. As usual this book had it’s share of twists and turns for the reader to come but I found that it took a while to get there. The pacing may have seemed slow to me because to be honest I would have thrown this houseguest to the curb rather quickly and it seemed like the characters only wanted to discuss it over and over. Not my favorite by this author but still a decent read at three stars. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
