SNEAK A PEEK AT BOOK 1 – MAD LOVE:

Life had a way of expunging your expectations.

But it also had a way of rebuilding them.

I met a hero the day I walked into Klayton’s tattoo shop, broken and terrified. My heart was tattered, and my mental state was a plain of rubble in my skull. He wasn’t

your typical hero. But atypical was exactly what I needed. I needed strength to combat my weaknesses. I needed love to fight my terror. And I needed someone to look at me like I was whole, when I feared I never would be again.

I sometimes wished we could have a do-over. That I could walk into his tattoo shop smiling, clean, and glowing. But that would only erase the brutal, beautiful truth of us. I didn’t walk into his tattoo shop smiling, I wasn’t clean, and I was severely damaged.

But Klayton loved me anyway. Even when I was empty, even when I was broken.

Even when I was mad.

Title: The Ex-Wife

Author: Jess Ryder

Publisher: Bookouture

Publication Date: June 5, 2018

Page Count: 342

My rating:   4 stars

About the book:

You’ve got everything she wants …
Newly married Natasha has the perfect house, a loving husband and a beautiful little girl called Emily. She’d have it all if it wasn’t for Jen, her husband’s ex-wife who just won’t leave them alone …

Then Natasha returns home one day to find her husband and Emily gone without trace. Desperate to get her daughter back, Natasha will do anything even if it means accepting an offer of help from Jen. But can she trust her? And do either of them really know the man they married?

If you loved The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl or The Couple Next Door then this dark, twisting psychological thriller from Amazon chart bestseller Jess Ryder is guaranteed to have you gripped.

my-review_43_orig - Edited

My oh my, what a bumpy ride Jess Ryder has taken me on with The Ex-Wife. This one is a psychological thriller that keeps a reader guessing all the way until the very end, and then maybe even after you’ve finished the book.

Starting with a prologue in a hospital with no idea who you are reading about the book then starts at chapter 1 with Anna in the present. From then the chapters begin to flash back to then with Natasha. The things is Natasha is the current wife and Jen is the ex-wife, so the question becomes who is Anna?

Natasha had met Nick in a chance encounter while he was married to Jen. Jen and Nick had been childhood sweethearts but their marriage seemed to be one of convenience and coming to an end so when Natasha falls pregnant Nick divorces and marries her.

Jen however keeps pushing her way into the marriage even three years later. Natasha thinks things are fine however until one day Nick packs up and takes their daughter and disappears and with no where else to turn Natasha accepts Jen’s help finding her daughter.

So many layers to this story that with each passing chapter I felt like a kid at Christmas hastily unwrapping to learn more details. It’s definitely a gripping read from start to finish but when done I just wanted to continue on as I felt some things are let up in the air and my poor imagination ran wild. Such an intense ride from start to finish that I’d definitely recommend checking this one out.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Music Monday: Rob Zombie – Living Dead Girl

Standard

musicmonday

Music Monday is a meme that was created by Drew from The Tattooed Book Geek. You pick a song and/or video and share it on Monday.

The song and video I am sharing today is:

Rob Zombie – Living Dead Girl

I’m sure I’ve mentioned many times here on my blog I have a love for all things horror, I mean I spent five years of my life getting my head chopped off over and over again each Halloween at a haunted hayride and it was my favorite job I’ve ever had. So of course Rob Zombie is one that pops into my mind that brings horror to life musically so he’s my choice for a share this week.

Lyrics:

Who is this irresistible creature
Who has an insatiable lust for the dead?
Living dead girl!

Rage in the cage and piss upon the stage
There’s only one sure way to bring the giant down
Defunct the strings of cemetery things
With one flat foot on the devils wing

Crawl on me
Sink into me
Die for me
Living dead girl

Crawl on me
Sink into me
Die for me
Living dead girl

Raping the geek
And hustling the freak
Like a hunchback juice
On a sentimental noose
Operation filth
They love to love the wealth
Of an S.S. whore
Making scary sounds

Crawl on me
Sink into me
Die for me
Living dead girl

Crawl on me
Sink into me
Die for me
Living dead girl

Cyclone jack, hallucinating hack
Thinks that Donna Reed eats dollar bills
Goldfoot’s machine creates another fiend
So beautiful they make you, kill

Crawl on me
Sink into me
Die for me
Living dead girl

Crawl on me
Sink into me
Die for me
Living dead girl

Blood on her skin
Dripping with sin
Do it again
Living dead girl

Blood on her skin
Dripping with sin
Do it again

Cheerleader Layla and football player Tyler are complete opposites. She thinks he’s the biggest jerk in school and he thinks she’s too high on her horse to even be worth a second glance. When the two of them are near one another, sparks fly in all the wrong directions. They can hardly endure speaking, let alone dating.

But when Layla unknowingly sends Tyler a smack-down text meant for the girl sending naked photos to her then-boyfriend, Adam, Tyler has no idea it’s Layla and decides to play along. After all, Tyler cannot resist messing with the pissed off girl firing off texts about junk pictures, cheating, and girl code.

As the fallout from Adam’s scandalous texts plays out in front of the entire school, Tyler and Layla secretly continue to text each other using fake names. But as days and weeks pass, things take a turn for the serious between them, and suddenly, their texts mean more. Maybe it’s time to come clean about who they are and risk taking the relationship from texts to dates, then kissing, and maybe more.

They say there’s a thin line between love and hate. Can reality live up to the fantasy, or will Layla and Tyler be forever offsides?

Book 2:

Right Kiss, Wrong Guy

You’d think a girl with the most romantic name in the world would have her pick of boyfriends.

But Valentine’s Day sucks when you’re single. Just ask Juliet Valentine, whose last name happens to also be the name of the most dreaded made-up holiday ever.

A romantic at heart, this year is especially hard on Juliet. Her sister, Layla, is in a new relationship, her mom’s match-making business is doing great, and her school’s new fundraiser is “Love-Grams.”

Juliet’s miserable, a little jealous, and lonely.

Quarterback Jared Black is the most popular guy in school. A star athlete, Jared tops the most-eligible bachelor list year after year. But to Juliet Valentine, he’s all but invisible. She isn’t impressed.

Jared’s never had to work hard to get the attention of a girl before. Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and he’s determined to ask Juliet out. After all, if Tyler can win over Layla, Jared ought to have a shot with Layla’s sister.

Unlike Tyler and Layla, charm, flattery and good looks won’t work on Juliet. So with the V-Day dance coming up, Jared uses the school’s Love-Grams to let Juliet know how he feels. Should be simple enough, right?

Wrong. Each attempt ends up either in the trash or thrown in someone’s face. Juliet won’t play his game.

Now, without a date to the dance Jared realizes it’s going to take a Hail Mary to win the girl of his dreams.

Reality Gold by Tiffany Brooks #bookreview #YA

Title: Reality Gold

Author: Tiffany Brooks

Publisher: Dunemere Books

Publication Date: May 22, 2018

Page Count: 398

My rating:   4 stars

About the book:

High school senior Riley Ozaki is desperate to change her reality after an avalanche of Internet shaming ruined her life. With her reputation and self-esteem at rock bottom thanks to cyberbullying, Riley needs to do something drastic to repair her social standing—which is why she decided to try out for a reality TV show. Suddenly, she’s dropping onto a deserted tropical island with nineteen other teens for a Survivor-style competition that she hopes will be her redemption.

With a cast of vivid characters who will stop at nothing to win the show, a cursed island setting, and a priceless treasure waiting to be discovered, Reality Gold pitches readers right into scheming web of lies, love, and betrayal. This novel is a fast-paced journey where allies may not be who they say they are, and legends abound. Riley must embrace all of life’s realities, including loss and deceit, in order to discover who she truly is.

my-review_43_orig - Edited

Reality Gold by Tiffany Brooks was a bit like taking Survivor and crossing it over with the Goonies. A group of 18-ish teens have signed up to film a reality show on an island where there’s a treasure that folks have searched for years to find.

After Riley Ozaki experiences being shunned by her fellow classmates for a scandal at her school she feels like the only way to erase her internet shame is to show everyone just who she really is by joining a reality TV competition. It doesn’t hurt that the show is being filmed on the very same deserted Black Rock island off the coast of Brazil that hides a stolen treasure of Inca gold.

As the teens are being dropped on the island they are told that not only will they be competing in challenges for the show’s prize of a million dollars they will also be able to search for the treasure for an additional cash prize if found. After being dropped off they are split into two groups and begin their challenges of surviving the island.

Reality Gold was a fast paced, action packed adventure from start to finish. You have the Survivor-ish reality side of competing teams and being voted off the island mixed with the One Eyed Willie’s treasure to find reading maps, finding clues and facing danger. There’s plenty of drama, danger and exciting adventure in the book to captivate while reading this one. It’s also very well done with bringing in today’s teen social media obsession and today’s technology to infuse those into the story. A fun read that I’d recommend checking out.

About the author:

Tiffany Brooks lives in San Francisco with her family and a bunch of pets, who luckily don’t object to being featured on her Instagram. The best thing about living on the west coast is she can find out what happens on Game of Thrones three hours ahead of air time. That, plus not having winter weather, means she’ll never move back east, although that doesn’t stop her New England family from asking when she’ll be moving “back home” to NYC or Connecticut. About the book:

In this intricate and enthralling domestic drama, perfect for fans of Big Little Lies and The Affair, the internationally bestselling author of the “gossipy page-turner” (GlamourThe Perfect Neighbors goes deep into a marriage in crisis, peeling back layers of secrets to discover where the relationship veered off course—and whether it is worth saving.

Josie and Frank Moore are happy…at least Josie thinks they are. As parents of two young girls in the Chicago suburbs, their days can be both busy and monotonous, and sometimes Josie wonders how she became a harried fortysomething mother rather than the driven career woman she once was. But Frank is a phenomenal father, he’s handsome and charismatic, and he still looks at his wife like she’s the beautiful woman he married more than a decade ago. Josie isn’t just happy—she’s lucky.

Until one Saturday morning when Josie borrows her husband’s phone to make a quick call—and sees nine words that shatter her world.

Now Josie feels as if she is standing at the edge of a sharp precipice. As she looks back at pivotal moments in the relationship she believed would last fo

rever, she is also plunging ahead, surprising everyone (especially herself) with how far she will go to uncover the extent of her husband’s devastating secret.

With her “conversational writing style and a knack for making readers care about her characters” (The Washington Post) bestselling author Sarah Pekkanen paints a vivid, kaleidoscopic portrait of a marriage before and during a crisis—and of a woman who fears that the biggest secret of all may be the one she’s hiding from herself.

my-review_43_orig - Edited

Josie is a young mother who believes that while her marriage may not be without flaws it certainly is solid. That is until the day Josie and her husband Frank are rushing to get their two young daughters to a birthday party they make a stop at a Starbucks where Josie realizes she forgot her own phone and needs to borrow Frank’s.

Before Frank returns to the car an email pops up on his phone that looks as if Frank has been having an affair. Livid and hurt Josie is more in a state of shock in the beginning but she knows that she needs to find out the details of just what her husband has been up to before she can make any decisions about their future.

The Ever After by Sarah Pekkanen is a domestic drama that takes a closer look at a couple that are experiencing some rocky times in their marriage. While reading this one I found myself quite on the fence with my feelings for the book and going back and forth on it’s merits.

One thing you will find is that Sarah Pekkanen is certainly a talented author as it is easy to move right through the story with her great writing. However, the longer the book went on I found myself thinking quite often, is this it? I just wanted the story to be more than it actually is. There’s certainly drama and the aftermath but I had a hard time with the fact that there really isn’t any answers either although I suppose that would be a realistic approach to a woman in that predicament it felt a let down in a book. When done with this one I know I will certainly read more from this author in the future but this one was just one of those it was ok but forgettable to me reads.

Then, while scuba diving in the crystal blue sea, they find something in the water. . . .

Suddenly the newlyweds must make a dangerous choice: to speak out or to protect their secret. After all, if no one else knows, who would be hurt? Their decision will trigger a devastating chain of events. . . .

Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?

Wonder no longer. Catherine Steadman’s enthralling voice shines throughout this spellbinding debut novel. With piercing insight and fascinating twists, Something in the Water challenges the reader to confront the hopes we desperately cling to, the ideals we’re tempted to abandon, and the perfect lies we tell ourselves.

my-review_43_orig - Edited

Something In The Water by Catherine Steadman is a thriller that certainly had an opening that should grab readers right away, the main character digging a grave. After finding out that there would be a need for a grave readers jump back in time to find out just what led to that event.

Erin and Mark seem to be very much in love and excited to be planning their wedding and honeymoon. Erin is a budding filmmaker working on a documentary in which she’s interviewing criminals and Mark a successful investment banker. However when Mark loses his job that is where things start to get a little shaky in their perfect bubble.

With the honeymoon already set to happen Erin and Mark agree to set their troubles aside and still go on the vacation to Bora Bora. Sun and surf and adventure seems to be just what the couple need to bring them right back together. When out scuba diving though they make a find in the water that will lead them down a very dangerous path.

Something In The Water was actually very engaging and kept the pages turning rather easily as the events unfolded. For me though as much as I liked finding out more and more I also struggled some with liking Erin, she would get a bit frantic which I would sometimes find annoying. If it really weren’t for those moments though I would have rated higher than 3.5 stars since the story was one that was rather fun to watch unfold and  with this being a debut novel I would certainly be interested in reading more in the future.

EXCERPT:

The shadow woman floated upward. Her elegant ascent was the most beautiful thing Harry had ever seen. Outside the wind screamed like a lost soul in perpetual torment. There was an inhuman quality in the sound, which convinced Harry he’d lost any chance of reasoning with Evie.

Edgar dipped inside a pocket and pulled out a stone. It was black, larger than a half-dollar, and etched with gold symbols. Edgar grinned without a glimmer of humor as he held up the stone like a talisman.

“I hope you rot in hell!” Edgar said as he faced down the specter.

She didn’t recoil.

As she floated closer, Edgar’s bravado wavered. Outside the wind’s fierceness kicked up and the soulful moan sounded more pained.

Author Bio:

I’m a Paranormal/Supernatural Award Winning author who grew up in Richmond, Virginia. As a child I suffered from night terrors. I’m sure you’ve heard of sleep paralysis which leaves you with the inability to move or speak. There are those of us who not only suffer the paralysis, but we see and hear horrible creatures. Most of the time, I had the good sense to keep my eyes closed. Yes, most of the time. Tell me, who wants to have nightmares about demons?

As I grew older, I realized some demons may not be hideous. To this day, I believe true evil is seductive, even beautiful. Unfortunately there are bad things you can’t outgrow. You learn to cope. I did that by writing about demons who will sip your soul while giving you a kiss.

As an adult I also discovered that love transcends nightmares. I’m a dog lover and on several fortunate occasions my dogs entered my dream realm and saved me. The author in me couldn’t resist, so in addition to writing about seductive demons, I’ve penned a tale about a mischievous pooch. If you want a chuckle then read about my canine diva. But…you may want to take a darker path with me. You may want to meet my demons. If that’s the case, then I want you to be scared with me. Is that wrong? I don’t just want to scare you, though. I want you to care about my characters. Because if you care about them, then you will be afraid for them too. Who knows, you could have nightmares about beautiful demons, too.
