Reclaim by Beth Yarnall
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Nolan made a big mistake on a previous case at Nash Security and Investigations and he’s surprised he still has a job. But instead of getting fired Nolan gets handed a huge case to work when attorney Lila Garcia seeks out the help of the agency. Lila is fighting for her client that was charged in the murder of her own son and needs help solving the case to try to free her client from prison.
Reclaim is the third book in the Recovered Innocence series by Beth Yarnall. Each book in the series features a new couple and could be read as a standalone novel. The earlier characters and some events get brief mentions in the later books but a reader wouldn’t have to know the events to enjoy the current book.
I have read all of the books in the Recovered Innocence series and enjoyed the fast paced and flawed characters. The relationships develop while the couples in each are investigating the current case going on at Nash Security.
With Reclaim I think though this read almost became too much of a sameness with yet another flawed couple forming from an investigation at the agency. The case was interesting enough but not really one that jumped out and grabbed me either. But with Nolan and Lila I think I was a bit turned off when the video taping without knowledge came into play in the story so I didn’t really get behind this relationship quite as much.
I will say I did like the creativity behind Lila’s compulsion towards the end of the story. Something that you don’t read often about but really is a problem so it was a nice little twist there.
Overall, an OK addition to the series but I enjoyed the earlier couples/cases in the series a bit more.

Behind Dark Doors (Two): Six Suspenseful Short Stories by Susan May
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Behind Dark Doors (Two) is the second book of short horror stories by Susan May. Included in this read are:
Scenic Route
Hide and Seek
Harassment Day
The Monster Rules
Where We Once Were
Desperate
Again as with the first set of short stories Susan has written a brief lead into the story before each read and then followed with a brief note on how she came to write each piece. Most of her stories seem to just come from every day events we all go through but she somehow manages to come up with an entertaining horror twist to every day events.
Harassment Day hit a little close to home for me in this book as it reminded me strongly of my grandmother. And I did learn that throughout my life I have probably broken about all of the monster rules. Anyway it goes though I always seem to enjoy Susan’s writing from start to finish and would definitely recommend checking out her work.
Overall, another nice collection of twisted tales for the horror fans.

The Silver and Gold Deception: A Romantic Comedy by Brenda G. Bradley
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
The last thing Dee Carter expected was for the jewelry store that she works in to be robbed in broad daylight. The daring thieves crash into the store and within seconds take off with tons of valuables. The next day Dee gets a visit from a pair of FBI agents who seem to suspect she may have had something to do with the robbery.
The Silver and Gold Deception was said to be a romantic comedy read but to be honest I really didn’t find it very funny or very romantic. I suppose some will find the comedy part of the read to be to their liking but it really wasn’t for me, just a bit too far fetched on the idiocy of the criminals involved in this story.
Also, some of the actions taking place in the book just seemed a bit too conveniently timed to be very realistic and then some of the conversations didn’t seem to flow well in my opinion. The plot seemed obvious from the start on who was involved in the robbery and then who would be behind it. It also seemed the romance is sort of just tossed into the somewhat silly investigation happening.
Overall, not for me I’m afraid. I suppose bumbling criminals and clueless FBI agents might be worth a laugh to some but too predictable and silly for me.

Darkness Released by Candis Vargo
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Hailey James had a very troubled past that is now coming back to haunt her on the verge of her twenty fifth birthday. The house she grew up in is now being torn down so she decides to visit it one last time.
Afterwards Hailey begins visiting a therapist to try to make sense of the nightmares that have been plaguing her. Gaining understanding of her past Hailey now has to try to find a way to stop the curse that has surrounded her.
Darkness Released is the second book in the Darkness series but seemed to read fine as a standalone novel. It’s a pretty short read and to be honest starting off I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it at all but by the end it turned out to be an OK read.
Hailey starts learning of all that happened in her past pretty early on in the book and some of it just seemed really weird to all be piled on at once. But the further getting along in the story things started making more sense as to what had happened with a lot being packed into a short read. I did kind of guess how things were going to turn out but it may not be obvious to everyone.
