I’ve always been, Miranda Phillips, the town pariah. Growing up with neglectful parents, having sought attention from all the guys that were willing to give it to me, I wasn’t the most well-behaved kid in Lone Star. Killing an entire pond of Mrs. Potter’s fish when I was sixteen is one of many juvenile delinquent acts I’ve done in my past.

But now I am Lone Star’s reporter, only reporter and I’ve come a long way from being that lost, troubled girl, even if most of the town still judged me for it. I don’t allow anyone to get in the way of what I want. Including Ryan John. So when I corner him in the dark hallway and get him to succumb to the sizzling attraction between us, I know I’m playing with fire.

***

Even though I’ve successfully avoided her for two months, I haven’t forgotten how she tastes or what she feels like in my arms. And when I get sent a mysterious letter from some company wanting to buy my thousand shares of water rights that have been in my family for over a hundred years, I’m convinced that there is no one…err, better equipped, to help me than Lone Star’s only reporter, Miranda Phillips.

I know how desperately she wants me and this letter gives me all the reason I need to spend one night with the girl from the wrong side of town. One night in exchange for her tight investigative skills. And believe me, she’s tight, in more ways than one. One night. Because Miranda is trouble and being on the city council, as well as guardian to my younger brother and sister, means I can’t afford trouble.

Even if it comes packaged just the way I like.

Liberation by Kate L. Mary blitz with giveaway

Liberation
Kate L. Mary
(Moonchild, #2)
Publication date: November 1st 2016
Genres: Post-Apocalyptic, Young Adult

From two-time award-winning author, Kate L. Mary, comes the sequel to MOONCHILD, “a much needed breath of fresh air in the world of YA fantasy.” After surviving the auction and a near death experience at the hands of Asher’s father, Scarlett Moon is more than ready for life to settle down, and with each passing day she starts to feel more at home in Columbus. Even with Asher ready for more than Scarlett can give, she manages to fall into a routine that almost feels like a normal life.

But one distress call is all it takes to destroy the serenity the group has managed to build.

As far as anyone knew, Paget had moved on with her life after storming out months ago, but the fear in her voice when she calls the warehouse tells a different story. Even though Scarlett never liked Asher’s ex to begin with, she can’t help feeling a little bit responsible for Paget’s situation.

Searching in the seediest part of the city, the group picks up clues as they try to piece together what might have happened. The more Scarlett learns about what the other woman has been through over the last few months, the more concerned she becomes. Even worse: there’s no sign of Paget anywhere in Columbus.

With all the clues pointing in one direction, the group leaves the city and heads for Hocking Hills. Only it seems the danger may have followed them, leaving nothing but death and destruction in its wake and putting Paget in more danger than ever before. As Scarlett learns more about the woman who used to hold Asher’s heart, she suddenly finds herself unable to deny how she really feels about him. Only, with Paget in trouble, Scarlett can’t help wondering if Asher might still have feelings for his ex.

EXCERPT:

He runs his hand down the side of my head, trailing my dark hair through his fingers. It’s gotten longer since we arrived in Columbus, down to the middle of my back, and when his hand reaches the end of my hair, his fingers brush against my arm. My skin tingles, and I take a deep, calming breath. How does he always do this?

“Moonchild,” he whispers, leaning even closer. “What’s with that name, anyway? I’ve been asking you for months, and you never answer me.”

His eyes burn into mine, and I swallow. I don’t like to share. I hate being vulnerable. Especially with Asher. But my head is spinning and he’s so close, and before I have a chance to even think about it, I blurt out the words, “It’s a nickname my mom gave me.”

He freezes and his eyes hold mine, but his expression is unreadable. “Your mom?”

A tiny voice buried deep in my brain tells me to stop talking. This is what I’ve been trying to avoid for the past five months. Opening myself up to Asher. Making our relationship more real. Sharing. He’s given so much of himself to me. Shared his entire past. His mom’s murder, his time in the pits, the murder he committed that got him sent to the mines. His father. All the details and painful memories and how they’ve affected him. But I’ve told him nothing other than general facts. My parents were killed, I was sent to an orphan home, I ran away and spent time picking pockets before being caught and sent to the mines. I’ve intentionally kept out all the emotional details.

But for some reason, right now, I don’t want to listen to that voice. Not while Asher’s eyes are burning into mine, making everything hazy. I feel drunk. Drunk on Asher.

“I’ve never been a good sleeper, even as a baby. I got my mom up at least three times a night until I was four. My dad called me a night owl.” I smile despite the stinging that has started at the back of my throat. “But my mom corrected him. She said I was just a child of the moon. Her own little Moonchild. It stuck.”

Asher’s expression is still blank, and he seems to be holding his breath, almost like he’s afraid the littlest sound will break the spell and I’ll curl into myself. He doesn’t want me to pull away from him, and even though I know I should, I don’t want to either. No one has ever been as welcoming and warm as Asher is.

“How did it end up on the wanted posters?” he whispers. “How did they find out about something like that?”

I wince and want to look away from him. His expression is unguarded, and it’s like he’s looking at me through a microscope.

“I don’t know,” I say softly. “Probably a neighbor or friend. Someone who knew my parents. I never told anyone at the orphan home or in the mines… I don’t know how they found out. But it hurts when I see it on the posters. It twists the memories I have of my mom into something ugly and—” I slam my mouth shut.

No. I’ve gone too far. I need to keep some of myself tucked away, hidden from Asher and his disarming smile.

The expression in his eyes is different now. There’s hope swimming in them now when he brushes my hair back, away from my face, the tips of his fingers barely grazing

my cheek. A tremble moves through me, and I suck in a deep breath. I should leave while I still can. Being this close to Asher is never a good idea.

His Christmas Cowgirl (Wildflower Ranch #6) by Alissa Callen

His Christmas Cowgirl (Wildflower Ranch #6)His Christmas Cowgirl by Alissa Callen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Peta Dixon has been traveling and when she returns home to her ranch she finds the stubborn Garrett Ross has stepped in as foremen while she was gone when her normal foremen was injured. Walking into her home Peta finds Garrett has made himself at home instead of staying in the foreman’s cottage which does not put the pair off to a good start.

With Peta just coming in from vacation she’s just had a makeover that this cowgirl just isn’t quite comfortable with but Garrett takes as there’s no way this woman is a true cowgirl. As Garrett and Peta find themselves forced to continue to work together the pair find that they’ve both come to conclusions about the other that weren’t close to the truth.

His Christmas Cowgirl is the sixth book in the Wildflower Ranch series set in the small town of Marietta, Montana which of course is one of my favorite places to visit while reading during the holiday season. Each of the books in the series can be read as standalone novels as they each feature different couples but there are of course glimpses into previous characters in the other books and events that take place in Marietta over the course of all the series that feature this lovely town.

This book is a case of the classic first impressions that had been way off base and as the characters get to know one another they find that they have more in common than either ever dreamed. The relationship is given the chance to grow as the pair get to know one another while all the events and activities are taking place leading up to the holiday season.

Overall, another great holiday romance that takes place in the lovely small town of Marietta, Montana. I just love the small town holiday feel that happens during all of these wonderful stories.

Unmasking Miss Appleby (Baleful Godmother, #1) by Emily Larkin

Unmasking Miss Appleby (Baleful Godmother, #1)Unmasking Miss Appleby by Emily Larkin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Charlotte Appleby had lost her parent at an early age and was then sent to live with her aunt and uncle where instead of feeling like family she had felt more of a servant. On Charlotte’s 25th birthday she receives a strange visitor in her room, a faerie that tells Charlotte that she is allowed to make one wish. The only thing that Charlotte has ever wanted is the ability to support herself and not rely on her aunt and uncle so Charlotte debates carefully and decides to wish for the ability of metamorphosis.

With Charlotte’s new ability she leaves her home and sets off to London to find a job now that she has the ability to mask herself as a man since a woman wouldn’t be able to obtain work. Answering an ad for a position as a gentlemen’s secretary Charlotte finds herself working for Lord Cosgrove but the Lord has his share of problems that Charlotte quickly becomes involved in. Someone had attacked Lord Cosgrove and he feels that his life might be threatened as more events happen.

Unmasking Miss Appleby is the first book in the Baleful Godmother series by Emily Larkin. However, the Fey Quartet series by Emily Larkin is a series of novella prequels that give a look into the ancestors of the characters that we find in the Baleful Godmother series. It wouldn’t be completely necessary to read the prequels to understand this series but it was nice to have read more depth into how Charlotte came about receiving her birthday wish from a faerie.

Unmasking Miss Appleby is one of those books that was easy for me to become completely engaged in reading as it crosses so many genres and categories and has a life all of it’s own. This is a mix of a historical, romance, paranormal, mystery with a lot of action and adventure thrown into the mix to keep the story flowing. Charlotte’s ability to change shapes adds so much into the book as far as helping her progress in her life and then helping her to help her new boss to solve his problems so it all wraps in quite nicely to make one fun story to follow.

My only warning with this one would be to those that do not prefer sexual content. There is quite a bit of it in here with Charlotte not knowing anything about sex with this set in the early 1800’s she finds herself tossed into things she had no knowledge of in her new position as a man and the sexual discovery is a big part of the story.

Overall, looking forward to the rest of this series, a great start with a historical romance with a touch of paranormal and mystery in the mix.

Have you ever craved something so badly that all reason was just an excuse getting in your way?

Have you needed something so desperately that you didn’t care how you got it or who you hurt in the process?

I have—and not that long ago.

Acceptance.

Acceptance… from family and friends…

Acceptance of the person I am inside and not outright rejection.

How that overwhelming yearning for acceptance can mold you into someone you don’t recognize when you look in the mirror. I’m through hiding behind one façade after another—it’s time for the world to meet the real me.
