About the book:
Named after her beloved tabby, Deputy Donut, Emily Westhill’s donut shop in small-town Fallingbrook, Wisconsin, is doing so well, she’s expanding into catering weddings. But a killer is about to crash the reception . . .
Normally, Emily’s eyes tend to glaze over when prospective brides go on about their wedding plans. But when the owner of the clothing shop, Dressed to Kill, asks Emily to design a donut wall for her reception, she’s immediately sweet on the idea. With the help of her father-in-law and business partner—the former police chief of Fallingbrook—she hangs the treats from dowels on the wall so guests can help themselves.
But that night, when the groom ends up on the floor with signs of poisoning, Emily suspects someone has tampered with her treats. When the groom dies, there’s no way to sugarcoat it: she’s got a murder on her hands. Despite a list of suspects as long as the guest list, Emily vows to find out who created the killer confection to save her shop’s reputation and keep the bride out of handcuffs. She’ll have to move fast . . . before the poisoner takes a powder.
Goodbye Cruller World by Ginger Bolton is the second installment of the cozy Deputy Donut Mystery series. In the first book of this series we met Emily Westhill who co-owns the Deputy Donut donut shop named after her tabby cat. Emily used to work as a 911 dispatcher until the day her husband who was a police officer was killed so now she and her retired police chief father-in-law sell donuts instead.
Business is going well at the donut shop and Emily has agreed to take on a catering job for the lady that runs the nearby clothing shop, Dressed to Kill. Emily has been asked to cater her wedding reception so Emily comes up with the concept of a donut wall where the sweet treats can be hung and guests can help themselves at the reception.
The night of the reception things seem to be going along as well as can be expected when the bride had invited an ex and the groom begins to drink rather heavily. With all the commotion Emily takes her eye off of the donuts for a bit only to come back and find the groom on the floor and suspicious power next to the sweet treats. When all signs point to yet another murder in town Emily can’t help but try to solve the crime.
Again I find myself feeling a bit let down by the second book of a cozy series. Now overall this series has some nice characters and I love the fact that there’s a heavy police involvement so it’s not so far fetched for Emily to be involved… However, the first book in this series had Emily teaming up with a quirky elderly neighbor and that character is now gone so color me disappointed as the others in here are quite normal, even the furry Deputy Donut just seems to do normal cat things without and extra chuckle to the antics. Since my number one is the quirky fun factor I had to lower my rating a tad but this is still a solid mystery overall.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

About the author:
Ginger Bolton is the pseudonym of an Agatha-nominated cozy mystery author. She is the author of Survival of the Fritters, the debut novel in the Deputy Donut Mystery series, and is very fond of donuts, coffee, and coffee shops that encourage patrons to linger and chat. Ginger lives in a rural area surrounded by cozy villages. When she isn’t reading, writing, or daydreaming while gazing out windows, she walks her dogs, plays an electric piano (she uses earphones so as not to frighten the wildlife,) creates minor disasters in her kitchen, and, very occasionally, takes part in local amateur theater productions, which, intended or not, become comedies.
Glad you still liked, Carrie. Sounds like a good mystery. ❤ I just love the cute cover!

I wanted to request for this book, I am glad I didn’t. My first venture into cozy didn’t seem to work very well

I think it all depends on what you prefer in the books on whether they will work for you or not. For me I prefer the over the top quirky fun ones when others prefer the straight mystery realistic stories.

I understand. I just wanted a fun read… But the first one I read wasn’t so much of fun

I’ve had several that were just sort of ordinary and dare I say blah and even one that got into some very tough subject matter that definitely didn’t fit a cozy.

Okay. I’m not going to complain about my wedding anymore! I’m sorry this wasn’t as good as the first one. Hopefully the next will have the quirkiness back. Terrific review Carrie!☺️

Yeah. My “special” day (in early October) consisted of rain, sleet, snow, and my mother passing out drunk at the reception. But like I said, I’m not complaining!

Well… I’ve heard that rain is actually supposed to be lucky for your wedding day so at least you have that to hold onto. 🙂

Sounds like a perfect time and it’s quite popular to do especially for those not getting the perfect day they wanted to first time.

Great review Carrie. I enjoyed the first one in this series as well, so I guess I will have to see if there is enough to keep me interested with the changes.

Thanks Carla! I kind of thought after the first book that she dropped the ball not getting the whole knitting club in on the action anyway for some really quirky, funny moments. Maybe it’s me but I love the over the to fun and not so normal… normal I can find it romance or something. 🙂

I like quirky as well. There is usually that one character that just makes you smile and gets involved in some way. Those are the fun ones.

Yes, definitely! Heck, I’m even happy if they have some quirky pet of some sort that has cute antics but if you toss in a eccentric character and a pet I’m in heaven. 🙂
