About the book:

The moment she opened her eyes, she knew everything had changed. The stale taste of alcohol; her uneasy stomach. She looked at her husband sleeping peacefully, and knew she would never tell anyone what happened last night.

You will think you know what happened to Alicia that night.

You will see a desperate wife, lying to her husband.

You will watch a charming lover, trying to win her back.

You will judge her, just like everyone else.

You will assume you know what happens next. But everything you think you know about the past, the relationships, what drives Alicia and her husband to lie… is wrong.

If you loved The Girl on the TrainThe Wife Between Us and The Sister, you’ll love this compelling and gripping psychological thriller from Sheryl Browne. The Affair will have you hooked from the very first page!

The Affair by Sheryl Browne is described as a compelling and gripping psychological thriller but I’d say this one falls more into a suspenseful drama. The story has multiple points of view with the majority being Alicia, her husband and her teen daughter.

Along with a teenager the couple has a newborn and as the whole family heads out in the car a horrific crash occurs and they lose their son. As the funeral takes place an old colleague of Alisha’s shows and her husband becomes suspicious of the relationship.

Now of course the idea that a wife had an affair and had been lying about it would cause some major family drama and that is the center of the entire book. The suspense lies in the fact that when the daughter finds out she runs off and the couple cannot find her for days and days.

Last year I had read The Babysitter by Sheryl Browne and absolutely loved it and in a way I could use my same words from my review there with this book in the fact that the story to me was one that was fairly straightforward instead of full of shocking twists and turns. The difference really between me absolutely loving The Babysitter and coming away a bit meh with this one is that in the first it was a matter you just know things are going to ramp up more and more and with this it was just hashing out an affair which wasn’t as exciting. The daughter missing gave a slight bit of suspense but the action wasn’t quite as over the top. In the end it’s not a bad read I just know that I was way more engaged with the other and wanted a bit more.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

About the author:

Sheryl Browne brings you powerful psychological thriller and contemporary fiction. Sheryl’s latest psychological thriller THE AFFAIR – the second of a three-book deal – comes to you from fabulous BOOKOUTURE. A member of the Crime Writers’ Association and the Romantic Novelists’ Association, and previously writing for award winning Choc Lit, Sheryl has several books published and two short stories in Birmingham City University anthologies, where she completed her MA in Creative Writing.

So why does Sheryl write in two genres? Quoting E. L. Doctorow, Sheryl says: “Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can only see as far as your headlights…” This she thinks sums up a writer’s journey, you never quite know where you are going until you get there. You might start with an outline, but a strong character will always divert from the plot. If Sheryl’s not sure where a character is going, she simply has to trust him to show her the way. Plus, according to one reviewer, she also has a scary insight into the mind of a psychopath. Please do find out more about Sheryl at sherylbrowne.com or on Facebook and Twitter.

    • Thanks Jennifer! The Babysitter was one of those that was just a highly addictive waiting for the kaboom game. This one on the other hand was trying not to yawn and switch on the TV slowness… I don’t mind the lack of twists and turns and a straightforward story but it has to grab me although I’m sure plenty disagree with me for both. LOL

  1. Everytime I read “gripping thriller that will keep you wanting more” or something similar under these books, it makes me wanna run lol this didn’t seem too bad though so that’s good!

    • Oh I know, and what is the funniest is the best ones I’ve found lately don’t carry those “this is the best blah blah” advertisements anywhere. Makes me sort of want to run the opposite way when they have one of those tag lines.

  2. Lovely review. I didn’t like the previous book as I felt the cop not checking up the background and blindly trusting a neighbor was not believable. I had hoped this would be great. I have the book, let’s see if I like it

    • Thanks Shalini! The other for me was one of those pull out the popcorn and wait for how far out of control it will get…. realism aside. This is basically the same idea but much much slower but maybe you’ll end up favoring this one. 🙂

    • Thanks Sandy, I’d liked one I’d read from her before so I had to click but this one was just too slow for my taste this time around.
