About the book:
The end of an Empire, The rise of a Queen
Emory Fae enjoys leading a quiet, normal life. That is until two mysterious, and handsome soldiers show up at her apartment, and the life she knew is instantly whisked away. Memphis Carter and Brokk Foster come from the magical and war ridden world of Kiero, and upon Emory’s arrival she will discover she is the long lost heir to the Royal Line and is thrown into the Black Dawn Rebellion with a dynamic role to ignite the rebels and reclaim her throne.
With both men being darkly woven in her past Emory uncovers hidden secrets, a power held long dormant, and will soon realize there are worse things than supernatural humans, love, loss, betrayal, and a Mad King.
Some things are better left in the shadows.
My review:
Black Dawn by Mallory McCartney is a young adult fantasy read with a touch of romance added into the story. A young woman has been living her life not knowing that she is from a distant land that is plagued in war until she is pulled right into the middle of it all. The story is told by alternating the point of view between several of the characters with each chapter in the book.
I can easily sum up my feelings with this one in one simple complaint, the book is relatively short so I don’t think it was what was there that brought my rating down but what wasn’t. The story drops readers right into the action and ongoing conflict and I quietly waited for things to be explained more but there wasn’t much in the way of world/character building. The lack of information made the story sort of hard to follow and become connected to.
There were also a lot of good elements in this one for a fantasy but again I would still have liked it all to be explored more than it was. The characters could kind of blend when switching the point of view until getting to know what was going on but it’s one that once feeling a bit more comfortable it’s over. Not necessarily a bad read overall but one that just felt OK in the end.
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

About the author:
Mallory McCartney currently lives in London, Ontario with her husband and their two dachshunds Link and Lola. Black Dawn is her debut novel, the first in a series. When she isn’t working on her next novel or reading, she can be found day dreaming about fantasy worlds and hiking. Other favorite pastimes involve reorganizing perpetually overflowing bookshelves and seeking out new coffee and dessert shops.
I don’t read many novellas because I tend to find them too short, but the few fantasy ones I’ve read I found especially problematic mainly because of the issues you had with this one.

I need to learn to stick with romance for the shorter ones because a lot of times those work just fine at the shorter length. This one though I saw some five star reviews on it and was curious but I felt like I was missing something, just needed to be expanded on to raise my rating.

Fantastic Review Carrie!😊 Very honest and fair! I like a lot of novellas but I can definitely see where your coming from and I definitely like romance novellas the best!😍

Thanks Dani! Don’t get me wrong I’m sure I’ve read a couple of shorter fantasy reads that clicked with me but I just couldn’t help but think this one could have been better if longer.

I guess it just depends on the story! Some stories work well with being short and others need more depth!😊

It amazes me though when an author can give a lot of depth in a few short paragraphs in their story but a 500+ page book feels like it’s missing something. LOL

Yes that’s one reason I love novellas! I also like the instant gratification of finishing a book sometimes!
