After losing her father rather quickly eighteen year old Emika Chen has been doing her best to survive and fend for herself. Being three months behind on her rent along with numerous other bills Emika is getting a bit desperate and when she tries to pick up a bounty tracking a wanted criminal and it goes wrong Emika is at her wits end with how to make some quick cash.

Rather skilled in hacking Emika decides she’s just desperate enough to try to hack into Warcross, a vitual reality game that almost everyone is plugged into daily. When her attempt goes horribly wrong and she finds herself in front of the world Emika is scared she’s on her way to jail this time. However, what Emika never expected was a call from the creator of Warcross himself looking to hire her for her skills.

After reading Warcross it occurred to me that I just must really be a huge fan of young adult books that feature a virtual reality world within the story. Ready, Player, One anyone?? One of my absolute favorites and while this one doesn’t have that awesome trip into the eighties it still had me caught up in the story and enjoying every virtual minute.

Emika was a rather likable character to me right from the start. She’s obviously tough trying to take care of herself but while she may blend that line of right and wrong to survive when push came to shove she was just a good person that you want to root for.

As for the story about gaming…. how far are we really away from this being reality? People are attached to their phones and gaming all the time so once an affordable home virtual reality game comes into play I can imagine the world will immediately be hooked so I think that’s why I love these stories so much. Marie Lu certainly didn’t disappoint with her version of the virtual world and had a solid story to follow centered around it.

Overall, a great read that I’m sure many fans of young adult will love, would definitely recommend checking this one out.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via Edelweiss.

    • I actually would have been more surprised if I hadn’t liked it with such a well known author but I suppose that does happen. I flew right through this one though and found it rather fun. 🙂
