Wake the Hollow by Gaby Triana
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars
After six years Micaela Burgos is now returning to the town of Sleepy Hollow after she received news of her mother’s death. Mica had chosen to leave the town and live with her father in Miami when her mother became obsessed with history and ignoring her daughter when Mica was only twelve and needed a parent in her life that paid attention to her.
The town of Sleepy Hollow was made immortal by literature but it’s a very real place that has Mica drawn into figuring out just what her mother had been obsessed with finding out about their lineage and what really happened to her. Mica is haunted by her dreams and the ghosts of the past during her investigation into her mother’s murder and the town is all on a treasure hunt to claim the reward for anything revealing info into the author of Sleepy Hollow’s past.
I was a bit back and forth with this story as I was reading. I really enjoyed the setting and incorporating the story of Sleepy Hollow into a new modern story but there seemed to be a few holes in the story here and there and a bit confusing to start out as to where it was really going.
For me personally I think what I’d like to have seen was to forget about any kind of romance aspect being added in and focus more on the investigation/paranormal aspect of the book. I think with Mica just losing her mother it felt off to have her worried about the next cute boy she meets throughout the story. And with that being added I think the “ghosts” of the story didn’t get enough attention that they deserved to make it really give the spooky feel that it should have had.
Overall, 3.5 stars for Wake the Hollow. While I enjoyed it I think it could’ve have been done a bit better to rate higher in my opinion.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Drat. I’m alway intrigued by books set in Sleepy Hollow but I think I’ll skip this one.😕

It’s not a bad read overall but I think they made her seem a little silly going back and forth between two guys when nothing really develops with either and she mentions love with both. Cut all that out and focus on the darker side and I would have loved the story.

This is why I hate love triangles, or even sort of love triangles. They’re distracting and almost always take away from the story.😕

I don’t mind them when it’s done really well, take the Infernal Devices series… or even Twilight series. There’s logic and necessity to the story to have all of the relationships worked in. Here it feels like the author has a YA checklist thinking she needs to put romantic interests in the book and it wasn’t necessary in the least but makes her character seem goo-goo for the cute boy which takes the focus off the main story line. Oh well, I’m sure some will love it the way it is anyway though.

I liked the way it was done in the Infernal Devices series, but I have to admit that I hated the whole Bella/Edward/Jacob thing. Of course this was because by the end of the second book Bella had gotten on my last nerve. I kept wishing Edward and Jacob would tell her to get lost, and then go have a beer together! LOL!

Well, Twilight is probably a bad example since you don’t really find out why it took place until the end of the series but hey, there was a reasoning there. LOL

I understood the whole imprinting thing. It was just Bella. I wound up rewrewally disliking her in the books and then when they picked Kristin Stewart to play her in the movies, well, that was it for me I’m afraid.😕

I enjoyed the books but yeah, I’m with you on the Kristen Stewart, didn’t care for her. One of those should’ve just stuck to the books moments.
