Here we are again sticking to my pattern of behaving one week and misbehaving the next. This would be my week of falling off the wagon and my clicking finger just going crazy. The weight added to the left branch of the old TBR shouldn’t be too terribly much with thirteen more titles, should it? đ
As always clicking the covers will take you to the book on Amazon!**

From the moment she discovered their secret relationship, Jessie’s been convinced Crane is to blame for the events leading to her sisterâs death. Jacqueline Firkins’s The Predictable Heartbreaks of Imogen Finch is a beautiful story of friendship, and second chances at love.
Imogen Finch has just been through her seventeenth breakup. She saw it coming, so she’s not as crushed as she might be, but with all seventeen of her exes leaving her for other partners, she’s come to believe a prediction her well-intentioned and possibly clairvoyant mother made over twenty years ago: that Imogen would never come first at anything or to anyone. Is her love life failing due to a magical curse? Insufficient effort? Poor timing or personality mismatches? Everyone has opinions on the matter.
Imogen’s ready to give up altogether. But when Eliot Swift, her secret high school crush, returns to their small coastal town after a decade of nomadic travels, Imogen has new motivation to try again. Eliot’s full of encouragement. He suggests that her curse is not only imagined, it’s easily breakable. All they need is one win–any win–and she can believe in love, and in herself again.
From trivia games to swimming races to corn-shucking contests, the pair sets out to snag Imogen her first first. But when victory proves more elusive than Eliot anticipated, and when his deep-seeded wanderlust compels him to depart for far away places, Imogen fears she’s destined to remain in second place forever. Fortunately for them both, sometimes magic lingers in the most unexpected places. And love is far from predictable.

â
EXCERPT (Book 1):
Demanding spirits barged their way into Ariesâs mind, each voice trying to outdo the other.
âPlease stop,â she said through clenched teeth.
For a moment they went away, allowing her to bask in the silence. But as soon as she took a step toward the school, their clamor started back up.
Aries ran behind a row of palm trees, shielding herself from streams of cars and pedestrians as the high-pitched aggravation attacked her senses.
âNot todayâŚplease not today,â she begged no one in particular.
Out of sight, she dropped to her knees and picked at the grass as the noise escalated.
âDammit. I said stop.â
Giving in, she put her hands in her lap. With her index finger, she wrote the alphabet on her leg. She needed deep concentration to make the connection. She waited for a clear voice to come through, dreading â yet at the same time accepting â communication with the dead.
After tracing a Z on her leg, she started over with A as a faint whisper formed. Unable to make out any words, she slowed her pace and drew the letter B. She kept repeating this action, taking deeper breaths each time, trying to match the frequency of the spirit.
Sheâd almost given up when a clear voice said, âYou need to find out the truth, Aries.â

EXCERPT:
They debated the topic for some time. Rueban knew he needed us on his side. He calculated his words and made it clear he would not back down while being unprovoking. I ought to have been thinking more about how he had disrespected our Treaty of Protection. How what he was asking of us could breed civil war at best and a war with a powerful race of magicians. But instead, I wondered what Rueban had been thinking. What those glances at me meant.
After a few more cups of wine, Father had had enough of debating and asked me if I would escort Rueban to his chambers. We stood and made our respectful, pleasant farewells to Father and took our leave.
We walked through torchlit corridors in uncomfortable silence. Rueban was the first to speak. âI suppose soon it wonât matter what your father thinks. You will soon be king.â
âYes, well. I have to say, I agree with my father. But I do hope we can maintain a pleasant alliance.â My voice shook as I spoke and I hoped he hadnât noticed.
Rueban didnât press the subject, showing surprising restraint. Being around him felt threatening, though, as if he were on the verge of attack. Still, even with the quickening of my
heart and the awkward silence, there was something oddly alluring about his piercing blue eyes and the way he fitted his richly-embellished tunic.
We approached his wing, and I led the way to his guest chambers, stopping at the oak door with rounded handles. I reached across and opened the door for him. âI trust youâll be comfortable,â I said.
He leaned into the archway and turned back to me. âYes, yes, I will.â
I signaled my agreement and prepared to walk away, but he stretched an arm out to stop me. I turned back and faced him. His touch excited me in a way I wasnât prepared for.
âPrince Xavier, itâs been a pleasure meeting you tonight.â He slid his hand from my back, and his fingers fell onto my forearm and caressed me. My throat closed. I didnât know what to say. His gaze was intense, and I knew we verged on something inappropriate, something dangerous.
Rationality fled as I met that gaze with my own. He rubbed his hand up my biceps and held me firmly. I didnât want to stop him, but even if I had, the fear in my stomach kept me speechless and immovable. He reached a hand to the back of my head and ran his fingers through my hair as he arched in toward my face.
I couldnât look. It felt sinful, with the Great Goddess peering down at me. So, with eyes closed, I reached out my hand and rested it on his waist. He opened his mouth to speak, letting out a hushed breath that sent shivers down my body.
âGood night, Prince Xavier. Now I see what you truly are,â he whispered.
I swallowed my anxiety as he pulled away and disappeared through the door. My heart slowed and my breath shook. What was that? What kind of game was he playing? What did he think he knew about me?
I slammed my palm against the stone wall beside me. Gripping my sore hand, I stalked back through the corridors. He had put me in such an uncomfortable place. To throw himself at me like that. But it was fine. I hadnât wanted it anyway. Iâd been just going along with it. Or at least thatâs what I had told my racing heart, that one day soon I would have a queen, and this night and other nights like it would just be distant memories. One day I would laugh about the confusing thoughts Iâd been fighting against since I was young, and they would plague me no more.
But here I am, awake at the midnight hour, replaying that night over and over in my mind.

Â
â
EXCERPT:
âI swear youâre going to be the death of me,â said Mia as Claire slipped into the nondescript van.
âOnly if you plan to die having too much fun.â
With a wry grin, Mia shook her head. âWeâve got a glitch in the Grenadine Necklace job.â
âWhat kind of glitch?â
âThe insurance company has asked that at the close of tonightâs fundraising event that the necklace be pulled from public display and returned to Paris. They plan to have armed guards remove it from the case and walk it out to the armed elevator down to the secure parking lot, into an armored truck and then to a private airport to be taken back to Paris via a private plane.â
âShit. I want that necklace.â
âItâs worth a small fortune and the insurance company was iffy about allowing the Petacci family to exhibit it at all.â
âRightfully so. It doesnât belong to them.â
âNo one has ever been able to prove that the Grenadine Necklace didnât find its way into the family long before Clara.â
âKnowing and being able to prove are entirely two different things, which is why no one has ever been able to wrest it from their greedy grasp until now.â
âYou know, if it wasnât for the fact that you donât so much as keep a dime from these heists, I would have left you twisting in the wind in Dusseldorf. But like it or not, you, my friend, are on the side of the angels. I think youâre going to have to chalk the Grenadine Necklace up to a loss.â
âNo. Weâve put in too much timeâŚâ
âAnd if we get caught?â
âWe wonât. Let me think a minute.â Claire brought her fist up toward her face, bouncing the back of her thumb on her lips.
âWhile youâre coming up with something, you should know, I think someone may be on to us.â
âWhy do you say that?â
âWhen I was running my routine this afternoon, the program found two clandestine hits against our firewall at specific enough times that I donât believe they were random. The first one was the day before the last job in Milan; I might have written that one off to an anomaly. But the second one was just this morning. I think someone is phishing.â
Claire looked at Mia and smiled. âItâs not like you to just dump a big problem in my lap. What are you thinking?â
âYou know me too well,â she said with an impish grin. âThere is a smallâa very smallâchance that you still might be able to snatch the necklace. Their plan is to send it out with armed guards who will exit via the still under construction new gallery. Their thinking is that itâs wide open, and no one can sneak up on themâŚâ
âBut you know better.â Despite what Mia liked to tell herself, she got just as much of a buzz out of pulling off these capers as Claire.
âI do. Thereâs a small piece of ducting that runs from the womenâs loo. We take a canister with knock-out gas and roll it down to them. The loo is right around the corner from the new gallery. Once their down, you slip in, grab the thing and then walk out with the rest of the people at the fundraiser.â
Claire returned Miaâs wicked smile. âI like it. Simple, elegant, and no one gets hurt. And who will I be this evening?â
âLuckily, it wasnât invitation only. Tickets were offered exclusively to those who made the right donationâŚâ
âI take it you made the right donation?â

Until he started cheating. The cherry on the sundae is finding out the truth less than two weeks before weâre supposed to stand up for our best friends at their wedding.
When a staggeringly good-looking and kind stranger comes to town and offers to take me to the wedding, I jump at his proposal. Who cares if heâs gay? Astor doesnât need to know that.
Teddy
She thinks Iâm gay?!
Iâm taking a vacation from Hollywood and going back to Elk Lake. My grandfather hasnât been doing well after Gram died and he needs my support. Luckily, Iâm between blockbuster movies so I can make the time.
My first stop is Rosemaryâs Bakery for one of the gingersnaps I remember so fondly from my childhood. The only problem is that the girl at the counter has eaten them all. After spilling my tea on me, she bursts into tears and tells me her troubles. I should be annoyed but Iâm oddly charmed.
I know what itâs like to be dumped by a cheater, so I do the only thing I can think of: I offer to take her to the wedding to make her ex jealous. Unfortunately, with the help of the tabloids, things quickly spiral out of controlâŚ

EXCERPT:
Faith
Iâve had an invisible target painted on me that only members of the opposite sex can see. And boy are they determined to shoot me through the heart.
It started with Bobby McEntire in the first grade. My best friend, Anna, used to help me chase him around the playground as a way of declaring my undying devotion. He missed the point entirely and tripped me so that I fell face first into a mud puddle. That single act of war ended any love Iâd once felt for him.
In the fourth grade, Kenny Franks caught my eye. He wasnât the typical boy girls pined for, which made me think he could possibly share my feelings. He had moderately bucked teeth, a nose that turned up just enough to appear porcine, and he wore glasses. Surely, I was enough to catch the heart of one such as him.
Alas, when I asked him to be my boyfriend on Sadie Hawkins Day that same year, he laughed in my face. Laughed. At me. The disdain I felt lasted through our senior year in high school. When he approached me at a friendâs graduation party and asked why I hated him so much, I reverted to childish ways and threw my drink on him before walking away. How dare he forget his transgression?
Then there was that tourist I kissedâmy first!âat a beach party the summer before my freshman year. I never got his name, nor did I see him any summers after that. I canât really say what I felt for him was love, but a definite hormonal reaction took place. Also, I may have pretended that he was my long-distance boyfriend at Katie Ramseyâs big back to school sleepover the week before we entered the hallowed halls of Elk Creek High School. Go, Crappies!âas in the fish, not the poop emoji.
In high school, I was all about Adam Sanchez. Adam was so far out of my league, I knew nothing could ever come of us, but that didnât stop my fantasies. I spent the whole four years imagining scenarios where he would claim me for his own. My favorite was the one where he strode into the lunchroom like a rock star taking center stage. He stopped right in front of me before loudly declaring my perfection to one and all. Then he got down on one knee and asked me to homecoming/prom/the spring formalâbasically, whichever dance was on the horizon. None of that ever happened.
Obviously.
Junior year in college, I thought Iâd found my life partner in Trevor Blake. Trevor was your typical tall, dark, and handsome specimen. He was sporty and studious. But more important than both of those things, he had a sense of humor that kept me laughing. The only problem was that after a year of dating, Trevor still hadnât put any serious moves on me. When confronted with why, he claimed it was because he wanted us to save ourselves until we were married.
He saw us getting married, so, yay! But also, we did not live in Victorian times, so it was kind of hard to trust that was the real reason. In retrospect, Iâm hugely grateful I didnât believe him. A happenstance that was firmly cemented when I caught him making out with his roommate at a kegger their fraternity was throwing. As far as gaydar goes, I didnât have any.
I dated a few different guys in my twenties, but none of them sent my heart into atrial fibrillation. I simply enjoyed going out with them while I was waiting for âthe one.â
Enter Astor Hill. I knew he was it for me the night we met. One look at his sandy-haired Leonardo de Caprio (from Titanic) savoir faire, and my heart rate took off like a particularly vigorous Fourth of July fireworks display. Boom, boom, boom! Everything about him shouted he was destined to be Mr. Faith Reynolds. Although, Iâm sure I would have taken his last name instead. I mean, Faith Hill worked so well for, you know ⌠Faith Hill, that I was sure to have equal success. Even though I was no singer âŚ
But then Astor showed his true colors and once again I was left behind. Thatâs when I should have probably converted to Catholicism and committed my life to God, a la the convent life.
I might have actually done that too, had it not been for the pity date âŚ
