Neverland Evermore
Sarah J. Pepper
Publication date: June 11th 2016
Genres: Fantasy, Romance, Young Adult

Neverland has a way of breaking people. It corrupts souls. It destroys hope. The evil festering inside it brings out the darkness in our hearts and leaves us worse than dead. No good has ever come from it. Ever.

It is where I was born.

Therefore, darkness is all I know. Corruption is in my bones. So when I see him, I mean to win his heart and then break him. I mean to lure him to my arms and then destroy him. But it is his intentions and his wicked smile that deter me…at least until a lost soul from my past catches up with us.

My world ignites into flames. My love’s sinks to the depths of the sea. We are from two different worlds that overlap for a brief moment in time. But it is that moment which carries me forward. It is that moment in which he lives in the past. It is that moment in which I embrace my true nature and seek vengeance against those responsible for feeding his hand to that godforsaken alligator.

The Crown (The Selection, #5) by Kiera Cass

The Crown (The Selection, #5)The Crown by Kiera Cass
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Crown is the fifth and final book in the Selection series by Kiera Cass. In the first three books we were introduced to America Singer and followed her journey through the selection process where 35 women were chosen to meet Prince Maxon and compete to become his bride.

In the fourth book of the series time jumps ahead to where America and Maxon had become king and queen and now have children of their own. Eadlyn is their oldest daughter and now in line to take the crown herself and with unrest in the country it’s decided for Eadlyn to have her own selection in order to find herself a husband to become prince. Now in The Crown Eadlyn has narrowed her choices down to the final six and must figure out where her heart lies along with learning to lead a nation.

I started off this series on shaky footing only just finding it interesting despite the lack of world building and seeming that the series takes heavily from a couple of other popular things. First it reminded me heavily of The Bachelor television show and then the world in which it was taking place seemed an awfully lot like the Hunger Games world.

But after reading the first book I found myself curious as to how and where the story would head and by the end of the first three I really found myself enjoying the story. When picking up the Heir I was by then a bit worried after reading a lot of negative reviews but I found that the new MC Eadlyn seemed to be written just the way I imagined she should be from the way she had been raised and I really enjoyed getting to know her and finding what had happened in the twenty years from the end of the first three books.

Now that we are finishing up this series I had hopes of how it would turn out and who Eadlyn would end up with and to my surprise the series ended much the way I hoped but also worked out quite wonderfully some of the ongoing issues throughout. I found this a wonderful finish to what started off as a so-so series for me but quickly peaked my interest.

Overall, this whole series has it’s flaws throughout but turned into a fun read that I really enjoyed and glad that I gave a chance.

EXCERPT:

A palpable buzz could be sensed throughout the Hegenberger lot, as the stage one infected turned and began to rise up and join the other zombies in great numbers. Cassie, Conner and even Tess took measure of it from the back of their cargo truck as they fought off their attackers.

The buzz of the second wave began to unnerve, and then panic the thousands of tailgaters, who up to this point had patiently and obediently waited in their vehicles for an all-clear signal. Many started to flee their car on foot, causing others to see them and decide to do the same. Even more began to try to extricate their vehicles from their confined positions in the parking lot, ramming their cars and trucks into each other, hoping to clear enough space to break free.

Those in the far western end of the Hegenberger lot, in the “C” section – who remained outside their vehicles up to that point – caught the buzz of crowd noise and the initial thrusts of zombies into their areas. More than one barbeque of hot coals spilled over, rolling underneath running cars. A series of fires and explosions erupted in that end of the lot.

A growing number of people were fleeing on foot – which hadn’t been a major issue until this point – as the second wave of Zs pursued them. A number of persons were trampled in the process. Some of those on foot began to climb up the middle observation tower in the B lot to escape the Zs on their tail. Even more tailgaters sought out the tower as a refuge when they saw others before them taking that route. The structure soon became seriously beyond capacity. It didn’t take long for the tower to tip over, sending bodies flying everywhere, scattered amongst the zombies gathered below. A plume of dust rose from the tower’s collapse. Several cars were partially crushed underneath the fallen structure. Z’s began picking through the numbers that had tumbled off the tower as it went down.

June by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore

JuneJune by Miranda Beverly-Whittemore
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After Cassie Danvers grandmother June passes away Cassie finds herself holed up in the old family mansion in rural St. Jude, Ohio as she mourns. Surrounded by the ghosts of the past Cassie finds herself questioning everything she’s ever known when a man shows up at her door claiming that she has inherited the fortune of an actor Jack Montgomery.

Jack has said in his will that Cassie is his granddaughter but of course his own children are going to fight to see that the fortune doesn’t go to this girl they’ve never known. As Cassie digs into the past she finds there was so much she never knew about grandma June and so many secrets that have been buried for years.

June takes place in two different alternating timelines throughout the story. First we meet Cassie who is June’s granddaughter in the present as she deals with the loss of the who she thinks is the last member of her family in her grandmother. Then the story switches ever few chapters back to June, Cassie’s grandmother, back in 1955 to tell the secrets that she’d hid from her family.

The book got off to a bit of a slow start for me, I liked Cassie well enough and had my interest peaked a bit as to whether she really was related to Jack but I think a part of me couldn’t help but question why she didn’t just do the DNA test and get it all over with. Of course if that had happened we wouldn’t have the suspenseful read that the rest of the book brings so once we got into June’s story I felt it pick up a bit more. In the end the book reminded me a bit of Fried Green Tomatoes where we get the look back into a bit of a scandalous past so the farther you get the juicier the story became.

Overall, a bit of a slow start for me but really enjoyed it in the end.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Carry OnCarry On by Rainbow Rowell
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Simon Snow is starting his final year at Watford School of Magic and just wants to relax and enjoy the last year. Unfortunately things aren’t starting off well for Simon, his girlfriend wants to break up with him, his mentor thinks he’s a danger and wants to send him away and his roommate hasn’t shown up yet. And to top that all off Simon things his roommate is actually evil but he can’t help but worry about him.

Carry On is a spin off novel based off the fan fiction from Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl. With a lot of Harry Potter type elements a lot will compare the two books but I myself haven’t read the Harry Potter series…. yes, I’ve admitted again I haven’t read them. But that means I can’t honestly say how similar this one get to Harry Potter or not and I probably wouldn’t worry about it if I had, if you love books on magic then just enjoy the ride.

What I did find in this book was a really fun read that had me laughing all the way through. I immediately became attached to Simon as a character as he often had me laughing but then when introduced to Baz in the second book I fell in love with him too.

The book alternates the point of view between characters all the way throughout and what this does is let a reader get to know each of them a lot better. I found myself quite enjoying all of the characters as it went along. The story has a slight bit of a love triangle type of aspect but it’s actually more that had me laughing the way it’s set up. But the main couple then become absolutely charming when together.

Overall, a fun fantasy read that won me over with the humor of the story, I won’t say it didn’t have it’s flaws here and there but I had too good of a time laughing along to not rate this one high.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
