BILY Teaser April 19

SNEAK PEEK:

No matter how much I needed him, I couldn’t let Neil throw his future away for me. He would do anything to keep me protected, comforted; I knew that like I knew the sky was blue. But I had to show him the same selfless love, or I’d forever regret holding him back. Which meant one thing: I was on my own.

My stomach turned to stone. But what about Ethan? Even if I did manage to drop out of high school and find a job that paid a decent wage, I couldn’t provide for a baby

by myself. I couldn’t raise a baby in poverty—I wouldn’t. My son deserved so much more. But how the hell was I supposed to let him go?

The Other Side Of Gravity (The Oxygen Series Book 1) by Shelly Crane

The Other Side Of Gravity (The Oxygen Series Book 1)The Other Side Of Gravity by Shelly Crane
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Other Side Of Gravity takes place on a planet where gravity, oxygen, and everything else are sold to the highest bidder on the black market, including people and the rules are highly enforced by the militia.

When Sophelia was a young girl her mother gave her a doll to celebrate her birthday, unfortunately this activity was illegal. Sophelia’s mother was caught and taken away leaving Sophelia on her own and with no way to pay the taxes required of the citizens so she was sent to become a slave.

After years of being captive Sophelia finally finds a way to free herself and goes on the run. She escapes to a ship and stows away only to be discovered. Fortunately for Sophelia a young man by the name of Maxton comes to her rescue and helps her flee again.

The Other Side of Gravity is one of those books that I was left just wanting so much more when I finished reading. While the world building was somewhat acceptable there were just so many things I’d like to have been expanded upon or given more life to in the story.

The biggest portion of the read focused on the relationship building between Sophelia and Maxton who were a likable enough duo and I was somewhat excited for them to get to know each other. But with so much focused on them and with such an unique environment I found myself wanting more out of the read than the teenage romance.

Along with numerous little things mentioned all through the read that there was no further explanation the overall plot of Sophelia being on the run and her family’s past seemed somewhat ignored. The last section of the book gave it a bit of attention but it felt a bit rushed and then ended rather suddenly. However, my curiosity was peaked a bit so I probably still would pick up the next in the series and hope the author expands on the world a bit more.

Overall, three stars, an OK start to the series that seemed to focus mainly on the relationship building. Would read the second book to see if the world and plot get more attention as it did seem like an interesting place.

I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, #1) by Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave (The 5th Wave, #1)The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains.
After the 2nd, only the lucky escape.
And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive.
After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Aliens have attacked Earth and wiped out a good portion of the population in wave and wave even though the humans have yet to witness any aliens. Now on the verge of the 5th wave being released it’s kill or be killed and a fight to survive.

Cassie has been left alone after being separated from her little brother and fighting to keep herself alive and find a way to retrieve her brother. She meets Evan Walker and needs to decide if she should trust him in her mission.

The 5th wave is one of those books I’ve been wanting to read forever but just kept putting off for one reason or another. I did want to pick this one up before ever seeing the movie and finally decided it was time to do so as the movie trailers really looked pretty good.

For the most part I enjoyed this book, there were a few slow parts here and there awaiting something more to happen with the characters but that’s really kind of expected with so little characters being in the book.

The book kind of reminded me of The Host by Stephanie Meyer but sort of a complete opposite way of an alien takeover. In The Host the aliens were all about persevering the humans while controlling them and in the 5th Wave it’s destroy and annihilate any humans left. Both stories are interesting in their own ways so with a bit of similarity that I found it got my curiosity up as to where this one would go and hooked me into the story.

I found each of the characters in the book interesting to learn about. My one complaint with the characters would come with some of the names of the kids in training. A bit silly to say the least but I did understand where the code names come into play so I tried not to giggle or roll my eyes when reading things like Flintstone, Oompa or Teacup.

Overall, a good start to an alien invasion read. Will be interested in reading more of this series to see where the story heads in the next book.

EXCERPT:

A loud boom rattles the windows in the building and I hit the floor. It sounds like a bomb has gone off, but I hear laughing and the music comes back on. It was just fireworks. I make my way back downstairs and out the back door. I’ll hide in the woods.

By the time the ceremony starts and Layla notices I’m missing, it will be too late to find me.

I see Bonnie and Jessie carrying out the white garments. It’s almost time. I move towards the woods and I spot Cassie looking for me. I flatten myself against the wall and slide across it until I reach the end of the building. I round the corner and take off in a full sprint towards the woods. I make it three steps and then I trip.

That hurt. I spit dirt from my mouth as I push myself up to a sitting position. I look down at my knee and hear someone laughing. When I turn my head, I see Dillan Dukes leaning against the wall.

“Slow down there, speedy,” he quips.

In moments like this, there is nothing you can say. All you can do is laugh. I burst into an uncontrollable fit of laughter. Dillan joins me on the ground.

“Are you laughing with me or at me?” I finally ask.

“A little of both.” His voice is deep and sexy. He smells like sage and cigarettes. “I’m Dillan, by the way.” He holds his hand out to me and I shake it.

“I know who you are. I’m Kalysia.”

“I know who you are.” He smiles and turns my hand over. “Don’t worry about this.” He swipes his fingers across the scrapes on my palm. “After Lunam, you’ll be all healed.”

“So I’ve heard,” I say as Dillan springs off the ground and helps me up.

We stand face to face in silence. I feel his heart beating between us and suddenly something sparks inside of me. This time the burning begins in my chest. My breathing becomes erratic. I taste his breath on my tongue, and I want to kiss him. I edge forward until we are chest to chest. He steps back. I reach for his hand, and he pulls away.

“Kalysia, we can’t,” he whispers into the space between us. “Lunam is beginning.” He brushes his lips across my hand and walks away.

My liberation from my self-oppressed lifestyle was planned out carefully down to the last detail.

Everything except . . .

HIM.

I didn’t see it coming, not by a long shot. My plan was safe. I was going to quit my job, say goodbye to the restraints of the life I had known, and follow my dreams.

I rented a house halfway across the globe in an exotic Spanish town on the coast. I made some new friends. I reveled in luscious food and a stunning landscape. Most of all I savored my new found freedom.

That is until I met HIM.

It was supposed to be a night of lost inhibitions, soon to become a sweet memory. That was my plan.

He had something different in mind.
