J. Kowallis, the only girl of four children, grew up in northern Utah with a head full of wild stories (most often unreal). At the age of 9, she wrote her first poem, a dedication to E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. It was so intriguing, her third grade teacher requested to keep the original. Between living in various fictional worlds, and spending time on her studies, she managed to graduate from Weber State University’s creative writing program. She now lives in Utah with her Mini Schnauzer, Etta, and spends most of her time still bouncing between this world and the fantastical while enjoying delectable über-dark chocolate and lavender baths. She enjoys dreaming about, flying to, and writing about distant lands (real or unreal).

When Omorose Bouchene was seven an earthquake hit and sent her out of her own world and off to Earth where she’s had to hide the fact that she can do magic. Those that can do magic have been hunted in order to eradicate all trace of it. After ten years of hiding who she is Omorose decides to run away to the realm of the Beast where she’d be able to be herself and practice magic.
Withering Rose is the second book in the Once Upon A Curse series but can be read as a standalone novel. This particular book in the series is a Beauty and the Beast retelling. It does have a bit of a life of it’s own bringing magic into the story and Omorose being the one that is cursed due to her use of magic. This story was an OK read, I liked the way the story brought new things into the mix but felt there was a lot that could have been done a little better to make me truly fall in love with the book though.
The story really could have used a bit better world building in the beginning to explain Omorose’s land and use of magic earlier on. I found it a bit strange that Omorose seemed to be more worried about her not being able to practice magic instead of just being thankful she’s alive or worried about anyone else of her kind being hunted but again I think that goes with the lack of understanding in the beginning.
Overall, an OK Beauty and The Beast retelling. Not without it’s faults but fans of retellings will probably find enjoy this read.

A pair of startling green eyes caught his and Dean felt like he’d been kicked in the gut. His heart thumped heavily in his chest as little pin-pricks of awareness washed over him and he found he had trouble breathing. His muscles tensed even as his body hardened and began to throb painfully. He bit back a curse. He’d never had such a reaction to a woman before in his life.
Her gaze flicked between him and Nick as he brought up his I.D. and made the introductions. The woman nodded and stepped back, allowing them to enter. She closed the door firmly and turned to face them, her expression fraught with worry.
“I know who you are. I just got off the phone with Amelia. She told me you’d be coming,” she said, twisting her fingers together anxiously. When she caught him watching, she stuffed her hands into her snug jeans. “I’m Megan Bailey.”
He gave her a slow onceover, unable to help himself. He was curious about this woman and the overwhelming desire he had for her. The entire world seemed to melt away until all that was left was her.
She was beautiful in an understated way with a honey complexion and a small dusting of freckles on the bridge of her nose. Rich mahogany hair had been pulled back into a messy ponytail. She wasn’t overly tall, the top of her head only reaching his shoulders, but she was nicely filled out with curves in all the right places, her breasts high and full beneath her shirt, which clung to her like a second skin revealing her tucked in waist and the flare of her hips. He swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry.
As if sensing his perusal, Megan glanced over at him and his knees weakened. Her eyes—those gorgeous emerald pools—pulled at him, so full of torment that his heart ached. Shit, this was crazy and so unlike him.
She blinked and he heard her sharp exhale, her mouth parted, and she looked so irresistible that he was sorely tempted to cross the short distance between them and find out if she tasted as good as she looked. He was at a loss, unable to pull away as she continued to stare at him. Was she feeling as out of control as him?
He forced himself back on track. He was here to work a case, not look for his next bed partner, and while Megan was quite delectable, she would hardly do. She wasn’t the type of woman a man fooled around with unless he had forever in his mind, and Dean Matthews didn’t do forever. No matter what his body was telling him.
He certainly wasn’t sex-starved, although it had been a while since he had hit the sheets with a woman. The case was taking up all his time, and he couldn’t think of anything else even when he had a rare moment alone to sleep. It was disconcerting and he wasn’t sure he liked it, bringing about feelings he’d long ago rejected.

In her teens she began reading the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie and in later years found Christine Feehan, Janet Evanovich and Julie Garwood.
She started writing at sixteen and enjoys spending time with her family, doting on her nieces and nephews, writing the many stories floating about her head and working on her genealogy where she can trace her heritage to England, Scotland, Ireland and Russia.

Ownership of books is expressly forbidden and anyone violating this law could even be sentenced to death.
Jess Brightwell’s family has been involved in the black market for books. He’s been raised to be a runner, delivering the books to those willing to pay the price and risk ownership. Jess has been sent to the library by his father to become a spy from the inside. He gets involved in the training only to find himself mixed up in the secrets of the library.
Ink and Bone was one of those reads I enjoyed from start to finish. Such an interesting world Rachel Caine had created for anyone who loves to read. It’s hard to imagine a world in which you could even die for trying to own a book but with bringing magic also into this world it became that much more interesting with the pursuit of keeping the books in the library’s possession.
The world building and character development in the story was excellent. A read that keeps you guessing in who you should be rooting for and who is actually the good guys versus the bad guys from start to finish. There are questions of who to trust and who is on the right side all throughout. A wonderful collection of characters that was just as fun getting to know as the plot behind the story.
Overall, definitely a series that I would recommend.
