For eight years, Melody Santos played the game of love and lost—big time. Now she’s back in her tiny hometown looking after her younger sister, making ends meet with an assortment of odd jobs. When her childhood best friend hires her to help him sell his family’s grass-fed beef, the last thing she anticipates is falling in lust with the legendary, brown-eyed player.

To put his family’s cattle ranch back in the black, Clark MacKinnon has his sights set on big contracts—gourmet chefs and restaurateurs. If that means long hours traveling from farmer’s market to farmer’s market, Clark doesn’t mind. Particularly since his new assistant is his childhood crush, all grown up and sexy as hell.

One night in bed leaves them breathless and hungry for more. But when his love-’em-and-leave-’em reputation collides with her trust issues, Clark and Melody must face the truth about what they’ve become: not friends, not lovers, but players in a game that’s impossible to win.

Warning: Contains filthy banter, raunchy sex, excessive Johnny Cash references, and hundreds of pounds of raw beef.

Excerpt:

Melody shook her head. “You can’t help yourself, can you, MacKinnon? You’re a hopeless flirt.”

“Flirting? Thought I was just drinking beer and being myself.” He looked down at the empty coaster in front of her. “What about you? What are you having? Gin and tonic, right?”

He remembered her favorite drink. Melody smiled. “No, I’m good. I’m on sister watch tonight. She really wants to cut loose. Someone’s gotta hold her hair back when the vomit flies. Which it inevitably will.” She waved her hand at him. “You should go have a good time. Get yourself a nice piece. Enjoy your Saturday night.”

Only Clark could make a shrug look so sexy. “But I’m already enjoying my Saturday night.”

Something about the way he said those words made Melody’s skin tingle.

As an experiment, she uncrossed her legs and leaned forward, resting her arms on the bar. For a nanosecond, Clark’s dark eyes darted to her cleavage before resting on his beer. A sudden, electric thrill shimmied down her spine. Her body clenched with pleasure, knowing she could still get the attention of a man as insanely hot as Clark MacKinnon.

But then…guilt.

That’s Clark. Don’t flirt with Clark.

My review:

Cowboy Player is the third book in the Cowboy Cocktail series by Mia Hopkins. Each book features a different couple and can be read fine as a standalone without needing to read the others in the series. Each of the relationships are off the charts steamy featuring a sexy cowboy.

Cowboy Player introduces us to Melody Santos who has a horrible history when it comes to romance. She’s come back to her tiny hometown with her sister taking up working with Clark MacKinnon on his family’s cattle ranch. Melody and Clark have known each other forever and Melody never considered Clark as anything other than a player but when the two find themselves attracted to each other the sparks fly but the question is can they remain friends?

Cowboy Player ended up being my favorite book in this series when finished reading. The fact that these are short reads always makes the relationships seem a bit rushed into but with the history between Clark and Melody I didn’t feel like there was a rush from the pair since they had been friends forever.

The chemistry was off the charts between this couple and the story line behind whether they could save their friendships after the hot and steamy night was a nice one to follow. I would definitely recommend this particular sexy cowboy romance.

Forget chocolate and flowers. This homegrown honey is all the sweetness he craves.

Small-town life is nothing but a waiting room for eighteen-year-old honor student Corazón Gomez. Work and school leave little time for love, but with a full-ride Ivy League scholarship and a one-way ticket out of the boondocks, who needs it?

The answer appears on Valentine’s Day when her old cowboy crush ambles into the ice cream parlor where she works, inviting her to go on a late-night ride in his truck. For the first time she wavers between staying on the straight and narrow, and going off-road with the handsome heartbreaker.

After four years working on ranches all over the country, Caleb MacKinnon is back on the family farm helping out his mom and brothers while his father fights cancer. The one bright spot: smart, funny, and wickedly sexy Cora.

From the start, they both know this blazing-hot love affair can’t last. But when autumn comes and Cora has to leave for the East Coast, Caleb must find a solution to keep himself—and his heart—from falling apart.

Warning: Contains hard, cherry-poppin’ sex in a pickup truck and a cowboy charmer who talks dirty in two languages.

Aishe is running. Running from the burn of a love she knows will consume her.

Running from a soul mate she’s never even met.

If only she hadn’t been hired as a merch girl for the hottest indie band on earth.

If only she’d never laid eyes on its front man, Emil—intense, sexy, and so unlike the men of her culture.

If only she hadn’t fallen onto his lips, then into his bed.

If only her flame hadn’t exploded into a full-on forest fire.

If only Emil’s heart didn’t belong to someone else.

Emil is running. Running from a broken heart.

Running from who he was with her.

If only Zoe hadn’t left.

If only Aishe hadn’t been right there.

If only she hadn’t been so damn gorgeous—insistent—different.

If only he could control himself around her.

Sexy friend teaser Absence

EXCERPT:

AISHE

I come from a family that burns with love. You wouldn’t understand unless you were one of us. I’m not just talking my father and my mother—I’m talking every one of my ancestors. It’s in our genetic build to spend all of our energy on love.

Once we come of age, it strikes and blazes with a fire that eats you alive. This love is a plague that boils in my race and in my culture, and I wouldn’t know a different way unless I’d broken free and seen strangers love with milder flames.

Tonight, my eyes go from the merchandise on my table to the blond-headed burst of life hopping off the stage. His gaze shimmers with amusement, a cocky lip twitching as he slaps high-fives to guys and pinches girl-cheeks on his way over.

“Aishe! You got those super-tight, hot little tees with the broken heart thingy on the front? The ones the chicks dig?” he asks once he’s in front of me, Emil, the vocalist of Clown Irruption, one of the hottest alt-rock indie-bands out there. I’ve been their merch girl for a few months now. Each night, I zoom in on Emil with less and less difficulty.

“Yeah. Troll picked them up this morning,” I say referring to their tour manager.

“This is so cool—finally we see actual merch money,” Emil laughs out. Then he sets a hand to the table and squints at me. “You’ve done much better than your cousin. I mean, Shandor, man.” He shakes his head playfully. “He couldn’t draw dudes to the stand worth shit.”

My face loosens in a smile. I send a subtle glance at Shandor, who’s busy wrapping things up on stage, coiling cables and breaking down drums. To sell T-shirts wasn’t what he burned for. Shandor was born with the plague of our people too, but he hasn’t found his beloved yet. My people, we need something to obsess over, so if it’s not a man’s love for a woman or vice versa, it’s something else, and Shandor, he loves his music. Once the band promoted him from merch guy to monitors on stage, he recommended me to fill his spot, and voilà, here I am.

Shandor raises his head and stills on us, focus intent from under dark locks. He’s got a sixth sense for when guys chitchat with me. Like me, he left our traveling community years back, but the need to protect any girl of our people is so deep-rooted I doubt he ever questions it. Shandor would do everything in his power to stop any man, employer or not, from toying with his little cousin.

I straighten so that I’m tall for my height. Though I’m not overly curvy, I’m lean and strong. Supposedly, I’m also fiery, a bit fierce, a bit ferocious, traits that make me who I am, traits I don’t need here in the outside world as opposed to amongst those I was born to.

I intimidate most men with the stance I take right now, but I can’t intimidate Shandor. He glares, telling me without words what not to do, and next he pierces his stare into Emil’s back. Oblivious, Emil juts his index finger at the case of lukewarm beers behind me, wiggles it back and forth quickly, lips pursed in anticipation. “Hand over one of those babies, will ya?”

Avenged (Altered, #2) by Marnee Blake

Avenged (Altered, #2)Avenged by Marnee Blake
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Avenged is the second book in the Altered series by Marnee Blake. In the first book, Altered, an entire small town comes down with a sort of flu like virus overnight with only a few people surviving the sickness. Those that survived find that they had gained super human powers and were then being chased by those responsible for experimenting on their small town.

Avenged picks up three months after the end of Altered. Kitty Laughton has been held prisoner during the time that has passed by the mad scientist responsible for the virus. Kitty has been injected, poked, prodded and tested on a daily basis. Finally help is on it’s way in the form of special ops soldier Nick Degrassi.

The Altered series is a fast paced suspenseful fantasy type of read with a bit of romance thrown into the mix. The first book focused on the relationship between Blue and Seth after the virus had hit all the while having a ton of action while all of the characters went on the run.

With Avenged the only thing that changed from the first book is the couple that is the main focus. The action and fast paced were still there and this turned out to be just as enjoyable of a read as the first. The characters are still dealing with the powers that they have achieved while trying to keep anyone else from having to become experiments.

Nick was a sexy take charge military man while Kitty is the innocent small town girl. The pair worked well together in the midst of all the chaos of dealing with the aftermath of the escape and what had happened with the powers. Another great read in this series that mixes romance into all the action.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

A-SIST

Anthropomorphic Sentient Individualized Servile uniT

Rogan is a robot. More specifically, he is an Asist – a personalized humanoid servant that provides protection, assistance, and companionship for a lonely young woman living on her own in the city. Chloe is trying to get her big break, singing at bars and clubs all over the city at night while she pays the bills as a substitute teacher during the day. Ever since she activated him many months ago, Rogan has been her beautiful, dependable, obedient, dead-eyed security blanket.

One morning she is shocked when he disobeys a direct command in an attempt to please her and his dull artificial eyes flash a hint of something new. Is this the result of the adaptive Asist servility programming or is Rogan actually thinking? Can a robot think? Can a robot feel?

As Chloe struggles with these thoughts she is blindsided by the singular Niven Adams, a handsome, confident man with the voice of an angel who is everything she’s ever wanted in a boyfriend. He’s the perfect guy for her, except for one problem. Niven doesn’t approve of Asists and takes an immediate dislike to Rogan. As Niven charms his way deeper and deeper into Chloe’s heart, Rogan tries to convince her that he is more than a mass-produced disposable servant.

With Rogan doing everything in his power to prove that his thoughts and feelings are real and Niven trying to persuade her to abandon her robot and have a normal human relationship, Chloe is trapped between the two things that mean the most to her. Does she embrace her relationship with the blond newcomer, or face that her Asist’s feelings may be more than features of his programming?

What really makes a person a person?

Is it a ticking muscle inside their chest, or is it something more?
