Death by Diploma (Chalkboard Outlines Book 1) by Kelley Kaye

Death by Diploma (Chalkboard Outlines Book 1)Death by Diploma by Kelley Kaye
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

After leaving her husband Emma Lovett is starting over in Pinewood, Colorado at her new job as a teacher. Immediately after starting English teacher Emma finds herself making friends with Leslie Parker who also teaches at the school. Arriving to work early one morning though Emma walks in to find the body of the custodian. Emma and Leslie decide they are going to investigate the murder on their own when the police don’t inspire confidence.

Death by Diploma was a rather cute and funny cozy mystery with these two young teachers looking into the murder in their school. Their investigation is believable enough as they tend to just stumble on clues all throughout the read instead of suddenly becoming like a real detective which turns me off some cozy mysteries.

One thing I did think went a bit over the top with these characters was some of their supposed actions as teachers. A few things along the way with them and other staff wasn’t really believable in a teaching situation… tossing a dodge ball at a student? Wouldn’t happen. But they were funny enough that I hope the author just tossed things in for humor’s sake as real teachers wouldn’t act that way.

Overall, 3.5 stars, an enjoyable little cozy mystery with plenty of funny parts during the investigation.

EXCERPT:

“You think you’re too good for me?” he gritted.

I glared at him. Where the hell did that come from? I wanted to get away from him and to try to deflate whatever this was turning into. “No. I don’t, but don’t you already have someone waiting for you?”

“Why not you? Can’t you be waiting for me?” he said tightening his hold.

“Let go,” I said, my tone sharp.

“What if I don’t?” he said running his free hand over my hip.

I was stone cold sober now and had had about enough of Taylor. I twisted toward him and kneed him hard in the groin.

He bent but recovered quickly enough to grab both my arms roughly. “Why the fuck did you do that, bitch?” he said, shaking me.

I twisted around quickly and broke his hold. I let out a yell.

“Hey.” His eyes darted around.

This time, he wasn’t fast enough, or maybe he caught me at the end of this terrible day. I became a whirlwind of kicks, bites, and scratches. It was something my mother and father had taught me to do if someone ever tried to attack me.

“Fuck, that hurts,” he griped, shoving me away from him.

My back hit the wood panel wall, but it might as well have been the ropes in a boxing ring. I sprung forward ready to have at him again, but someone grabbed him first, slamming him hard against the space next to me. He twisted Taylor’s arm high up behind him.

“Hey, I was trying to get away. She was the one hurting me,” Taylor moaned between wheezed breaths.

“Asshole.” I spat at him, and my foot flew out and connected with his shin. That brought on a slew of nasty name-calling from his mouth. But coming from him, I didn’t care.

“I should let her continue kicking your ass.” A deep voice growled out.

I finally stepped back and looked at my defender, and my adrenaline surged. It was none other than Brody. His wild eyes stood out from the carved features of his face. His black t-shirt was slightly askew, showing off a beautifully etched tribal tattoo as his strong muscular arms held Taylor in place.

“I’m sorry, Piper. I’m going to leave. Please,” Taylor said, interrupting my gawking.

Brody tweaked his arm as he looked at me, and Taylor cried out.

I glowered at Taylor. “If he lets you go, you best get the hell out of here.”

“If I see you when I step back in there, I’ll fucking break your arm,” Brody added, shoving him hard. It didn’t stop Taylor from getting up from where he landed and running down the hall.

My adrenaline rush drained fast, and I leaned against the wall and sunk to my knees. I could feel the air on my left shoulder letting me know my shirt was stretched. I was probably flashing my bra, but I sat there, frozen to the spot. My hands were trembling. I saw Brody’s jeans appear in front of me.

“He’s gone,” he whispered.

His hands slowly moved to my thigh and gently took my hands in his. A blanket of goosebumps broke across my skin. His hands were large enough to cover mine. They were slightly calloused and warm. I found them soothing.

“I’m alright. I just didn’t expect that,” I rasped, taking in a shallow breath.

He carefully let go of one of my hands and quietly eased my shirt back on my shoulder. Then took my hands again, holding them and rubbing his thumb against the back of them. Sensations coursed through my body. I flicked my eyes up to his and my

lips parted. His eyes were soft and framed in a thick layer of lashes. I gasped. Heady. He was stunning.

He leaned close to my ear. “Are you okay?”

I nodded and inhaled his scent. He smelled of cologne and polished leather.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

“I didn’t do much. You kicked his ass,” Brody said against my ear.

I laughed. I was feeling better and turned my head to tell him. I moved too fast and collided with his chin. “Sorry,” I said reaching over to soothe it, but he was on his feet.

“Haven’t learned my lesson eh, Sprite?” He laughed and rubbed his jaw.

I sucked on my bottom lip and apologized again. He gave me a smile that showed off his dimples, and it sent a shiver up my spine. He held out his hand again, and I clasped it and climbed to my feet.

White Raven (Raven, #1) by J.L. Weil

White Raven (Raven, #1)White Raven by J.L. Weil
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

After Piper’s mother passes away her father decides to send her to the island of Raven Hollow to live with the grandmother she’s never really known. Piper is rebellious and bored being in a place that her mother ran from years ago and never looked back. That is until she meets Zane Hunter and finds herself fascinated with the gorgeous dark-haired bad boy. Piper soon realizes there is something not quite human about Zane and something a bit off about all of Raven Hollow.

White Raven is a book that I really should have loved but found myself quickly annoyed with the main character and just couldn’t connect to the story from there on. I tried my best to enjoy the rest of the story line but in the end I also found myself wanting more out of the overall plot and a bit underwhelmed in the end.

Piper is meant to be a rebellious teen with a spunky attitude that should come off as independent and strong. Instead for me I found her to be more of a whiny, self entitled brat if anything. Also, I would have liked to see any sort of sadness when she had just lost her mother, her actions to me seemed a bit heartless to be so cocky and arrogant instead. It just got to the point that I saw her as very childish which ruined the tone of the read for me.

As far as the plot though, I thought that I was going to enjoy a bit of it but it just seemed a very slow pace read that never jumped out at me and got exciting. There’s a few moments here and there with a bit of action but it took to the halfway point to get a partial reveal as to what type of supernatural story line the book is about and then another 25% to get the rest of the reveal so the story is over before much even happened.

Overall, not for me I’m afraid. The writing is fine and I’m sure some will love the book but I just didn’t connect with this one.

View To A Kill (The Nostradamus Prophecies, #1) by Lisa Hughey

View To A Kill (The Nostradamus Prophecies, #1)View To A Kill by Lisa Hughey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mari Johnson had just found out that she had a twin brother that was separated from her at birth. Her brother had been raised by their father and she by their mother. Now, shortly after the two had met and formed a bond Mari’s brother is said to have committed suicide. Mari knows though that there is no way that her brother was suicidal and wants to get to the bottom of what had happened.

The only lead Mari has to find out anything on her brother’s death is that Mari continues to have dreams of his last moments every night. The two both had abilities and he had been teaching Mari how to use hers before his passing. Mari knows that her brother was a part of a covert op with the CIA but little about what his mission had been so her mission now is to get close to her brother’s sexy partner Nik Stanley.

View To A Kill is the first book in the Nostradamus Prophecies by Lisa Hughey. Immediately the story gets into how Mari has dreams of her brother that are a flashback of what had happened even though she was not there that night. From there you learn more of the abilities of other characters in the story and it really became quite an intriguing read.

I will say the one thing I found is that this could have used a bit more explanation of what the guys actually do. The hints at visual/physical ops wasn’t expanded on so I just had to assume it had something to do with the way Mari was seeing things she hadn’t been there for.

Otherwise, this book really went at a fast pace with the mix of psychic type of abilities while trying to solve the mystery of what had happened to Mari’s brother along with a developing hot and steamy romance. Just my type of read mixing so many different elements into a story and I will definitely be continuing one with the series.
