When Ted McKay finds out that he has a brain tumor he decides to take matters into his own hands and end things his own way. With meticulous planning Ted comes to the day that he finds himself alone in his study with his wife and children far away so he is determined to end his own life but just as soon as he begins there is a knock at the door.

Answering the door Ted is faced with an offer to join a suicide circle, he must kill one man that is a criminal and another that is in the same situation as Ted. The offer makes sense as it would be easier on his family to think him the victim of a crime but can Ted actually take others lives?

Kill the Next One is one of those books that while it sounded really interesting the story took a turn that just wasn’t a direction that I’m a huge fan of reading. Hopefully without giving away too much of a spoiler I’ll just say that this would be a thriller that while you think you are reading and following along with the story the events keep being reset on you. I can see some people loving the way this one is written and the idea behind the story but unfortunately I’m just not one that did.

Turns out there was a second video from that awful night four years ago. Mine wasn’t the only tape.

Too bad mine wasn’t the worst.

Drew can’t protect me no matter how hard he tries, but the roles are flipped now. I have to help him, but I’m not wired that way. Not anymore. That one night changed me more than anyone knows.

More than anyone could predict.

Three men think they’re above the law. They’re right.

But I’m willing to go beneath the law to make sure they never harm anyone else. Their threats don’t scare me.

When you have nothing left to lose because someone took it all away, you create the most dangerous creature imaginable.

Me.

Game over.

EXCERPT:

“Okay,” I concede. “You win. Why me? Why are you doing this?” It takes so much control not to cry, or whine. The slight shake in my voice is pretty damn understandable,

given the circumstances. Every muscle I have, including my lungs, keeps tightening, as if making them smaller will make me less likely to be hurt.

Not possible.

John shrugs. Shrugs.

“It’s nothing personal.”

I cough, choking on a universe-sized dose of incredulity. Nothing personal? This is nothing personal? A thousand responses flood my mind but I’m not rational, so none of them come out.

“Don’t you have a game or something? I thought baseball players didn’t get days off during the season.”

He pretends his shoulder hurts, rubbing it while pursing his lips in a pretend pout. “Perfectly-timed injury,” he says, adding a smile that doesn’t meet his eyes. “I have three days with nothing to do.” He leans in, his hand stroking my jaw. I close my eyes but don’t jerk away. “I get to do you,” he whispers, his breath filled with moisture, like he’s licking my face although it’s just air.

My ribs cave in on themselves, tensing so hard I’m afraid they’ll crack, my belly clenching.

I can’t let go. Can’t relax. I start to shiver. I can’t control it. My bladder threatens to let go. Suddenly, I’m ten feet away from my body, because really, what else can my caged mind do?

I’m in hell.

People do whatever it takes not to be in hell. We have a biological drive to survive. It goes beyond the body.

Speaking of the body, I remember the microchip. A whimper comes out of my nose. Tears fill the back of my throat, hot and salty, thickening. I nearly gag but control myself, a sob trying to work its way out.

If nothing else, they’ll find my body. Drew’s chip gives me that relief.

Unless they cut my hand off.

The helicopter cuts a sharp right, angling down, and because they didn’t buckle me in, I roll into the door. John thumps against me, his hip digging into my butt. His body is tight and physically radiates heat that makes me nauseated. I can’t stand having him breathing in my hair, his hands on my ribs as the helicopter rights and he pretends to need to touch me to sit up.

Why pretend? I have no power. He can do anything he wants to me right now.

The thought makes the world go wavy, white dots filling my vision.

Oh, no.

Crisanta Knight: The Severance Game by Geanna Culbertson

Crisanta Knight: The Severance GameCrisanta Knight: The Severance Game by Geanna Culbertson
My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Crisanta Knight: The Severance Game is the second book in the Crisanta Knight series. The series introduced us to Crisanta Knight who is the daughter of Cinderella and attends Lady Agnue’s School for Princesses & Other Female Protagonists with her friends S.J. and Blue. S.J. stands for Snow White Jr. and Blue is Little Red Riding Hood’s sister. The girls all attend the school because they are among the ones that have been written to eventually become future protagonists much like their famous family members.

Now in the second book Crisa is teamed up with her friends as they are trying to find the author of their stories. Crisa doesn’t know who to trust and doesn’t want to become the typical princess that is always in need of saving and wants to completely change the idea the each protagonist fits a certain mold. Each of her friends have their reasons for also wanting to find the author and try to change their fates but with the antagonists closing in it becomes one dangerous adventure after another.

I still really enjoyed reading this series so far and stand by my thoughts from the review for the first book. The series is a great young adult fantasy fairy tale read that often reminds me of the television show Once Upon a Time and a story line they had done on there where they were looking for the author that had written their tales. What we get in this series is the definite feel of these teenage characters who are all related to the well known characters we all know though. And with this carrying over to several books the story line is always full of action and more expansive than the ideas in the television show.

My one complaint with this one that has me rating this book at 3.5 stars, slightly below my rating for the first in the series is that I felt like I wished Crisa would quite pushing her friends away. I know she’s trying to be strong and has her reasons but I felt like the story lacked a bit with the secondary characters this go round but hopefully that will change in the future books and they can all work together on any more adventures coming their way.

Caught For The Holidays by Amber Bardan Blitz

For six months, she’s tormented me. Driven me crazy. For six months, I’ve teetered on the edge of combustion. Been an aggressive monster of her creation, unable to have the one thing I need.

Her.

She’s made me crazy. This is her fault. Now her games have come to a conclusion she never thought could happen.

I’m here, in her room.

In her bed.

Catching her for the Holiday’s and forever.

Warning: This short romance is pure guilty pleasure. These holidays, get caught up with Matthew, a completely obsessed hero who will stop at nothing to claim the love of his life. This book contains elements of forced seduction, which may be triggers for some. Happy Ever After. No cliffhanger.
The bed is a shadow in the center of the room. I ignore it for now because if I glimpse her, I’ll lose all control. I close the drapes the way they should’ve been closed the moment she stepped in here.
Can’t have anyone witness the things I’m about to do.
I turn, and it’s an effort to breathe. My pulse roars. She’s so close. I’m so close to her. We’re in the same room.
She’s all I think about. Terrible, terrible things swirl through my mind. Terrible things I’ve seen and done. She’s the rainbow that comes after the hurricane.
My reward for being strong.
To say I’m obsessed is like calling the sun lukewarm. Nothing else matters, now I’m here. She’s going to make everything better.
I reach her bedside.
The even sound of her breathing filters through the darkness. There’s a lamp next to her bed, but I won’t risk waking her.
I hit the button for the flashlight on my cellphone. A soft, gentle glow illuminates the room. I set the phone on the bedside table.
Fuck.
My balls throb, they’re so freaking full. Since the moment I planned to come here, I haven’t so much as touched myself to ease the pain. The flashlight app’s light reaches across the room. Not enough to wake her. Enough to illuminate the fucking magnificent vision on the bed.
My gaze eats her up.
A sensation hits me that’s a lot like diving out of an airplane. The ground seems to rush toward me. I catch myself and begin breathing again.
Have to remind myself to do that before the anticipation kills me.
Just look at her—hand under her face, sweet cheek smooshed against her palm. Curled up all innocently. As if she’s an innocent girl.
When her and I both know she’s anything but.
The ache in my balls threatens to have this all over before I’ve touched her. I tug at my belt buckle. That’s not going to happen; everything I have, I’ve saved for her.
She’s a wicked little tease, and she’s about to be treated like one.

After spending years imagining fictional adventures, Amber finally found a way to turn daydreaming into a productive habit. She now spends her time in a coffee-fuelled adrenaline haze, writing romance with a thriller edge.

She lives with her husband and children in semi-rural Australia, where if she peers outside at the right moment she might just see a kangaroo bounce by.
