Sweet Home Cowboy by Marin Thomas
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Elena Puente is now a teacher in Las Vegas and was raised by her single mother after her father had passed away and had thought the only family she had was the two of them. After finding out that her father’s grandfather was still living in Marietta, MT Elena just knows that she has to meet him before it’s too late so she hops on a plane during her summer break.
Unfortunately for Elena her trip gets off to a rocky start when her rental car breaks down forcing her to walk into town where she stumbles into the Copper Mountain Chocolate Shop to ask for directions. Instead of getting directions Elena finds herself in the middle of a speed dating session where she meets the handsome cowboy Wesley Banks.
Sweet Home Cowboy is the ninth book in the Love at the Chocolate Shop series in which each romantic read features a different couple that has some ties to the Copper Mountain Chocolate Shop located in the quaint town of Marietta, MT. Each book can be read as a standalone novel but if reading as a series you get glimpses into former couples and characters from each of the previous stories set in this charming town.
I’ve read this entire series and at this point I think the stories only keep getting better with each installment. I love catching up with all the crew at Copper Mountain Chocolates and hearing of the owner, Sage, and her new chocolate creations. The romances are always sweet and lovely and fun to watch blossom into something more and the town of Marietta never fails to toss in it’s own charm with the small town vibe. Definitely recommend reading of Elena and Wesley’s story in this latest edition of Love at the Chocolate Shop and look forward to the next story in the series.

SNEAK A PEEK AT CHAPTER 1:
She made an effort to open her eyes, compelling her heavy eyelids to obey. She swallowed hard, her throat raw and dry, as she urged the wave of nausea to subside. Dizzy and confused, she struggled to gain awareness. Where was she? She felt numb and shaky, unable to move, as if awakening from a deep sleep or a coma. She tried to move her arms, but couldn’t. Something kept her immobilized, but didn’t hurt her. Or maybe she couldn’t feel the pain, not anymore.
Her eyes started to adjust to the darkness, enough to distinguish the man moving quietly in the room. His silhouette flooded her foggy brain with a wave of memories. She gasped, feeling her throat constrict and burning tears rolling down her swollen cheeks.
Her increased awareness sent waves of adrenaline through her body, and she tried desperately to free herself from her restraints. With each useless effort, she panted harder, gasping for air, forcing it into her lungs. Fear put a strong chokehold on her throat and was gaining ground, as she rattled her restraints helplessly, growing weaker with every second. She felt a wave of darkness engulf her, this time the darkness coming from within her weary brain. She fought against that darkness, and battled her own betraying body.
The noises she made got the man’s attention.
“I see you’re awake. Excellent,” the man said, without turning.
She watched him place a syringe on a small, metallic tray. Its handle clinked, followed by another sound, this time the raspy, telling sound of a file cutting through the neck of a glass vial. Then a pop when the man opened the vial. He grabbed the syringe and loaded the liquid from the vial, then carefully removed any air, pushing the piston until several droplets of fluid came out.
Dizziness overtook her, and she closed her eyes for a second.
“Shit,” the man mumbled, then opened a drawer and went through it in a hurry.
She felt the needle poke deeply in her thigh, like it was happening to another person. She felt it, but distantly. She perceived a subdued burning sensation where he pushed the fluid into her muscle, then that went away when he pulled the needle out. She closed her weary eyes again, listless against her restraints.
The man cracked open ammonia salts under her nose, and she bounced back into reality at the speed of a lightning strike, aware, alert, and angry. For a second she fought to free herself, but froze when her eyes focused on the man in front of her.
He held a scalpel, close to her face. In itself, the small, shiny, silver object was capable of bringing formidable healing, as well as immense pain. The difference stood in the hand wielding it. She knew no healing was coming her way; only pain.
“No, no, please…” she pleaded, tears falling freely from her puffy eyes, burning as they rolled down her cheeks. “Please, no. I… I’ll do anything.”
“I am ready,” the man said. He seemed calm, composed, and dispassionate. “Are you ready?”
“No, no, please…” she whimpered.
“Yeah,” he said softly, almost whispering, inches away from her face. “Please say no to me. I love that.”
She fell quiet, scared out of her mind. This time was different. He was different.

Secrets of Skin and Stone by Wendy Laine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Gris is a Watcher, he changes into gargoyle form to protect and defend against fiends and has been sent to Hidden Creek, a small town in Alabama, to investigate a huge fiend problem that has been going on. Once in Hidden Creek Gris finds that something is very very wrong in the sleepy town, not only is there an abundance of fiends but also animal attacks and other very strange occurrences.
Gris comes across Piper just after arriving in Hidden Creek and finds that her dog was brutally murdered so he offers to help find out what happened. Piper is not sure whether she should trust this stranger, she’s already haunted by fiends and nightmares and feels that she’s very dark inside due to her OCD she struggles with but Gris sees something in Piper and is determined to prove to her that she is worth more than she believes.
First I have to warn of the content in this book as Piper is a cutter due to her anxiety and OCD so for those that do not wish to read about self harm then this wouldn’t be for them. But that being said I have to applaud the author for making Piper feel very authentic from the opening pages. I think her character was very well written and I could feel Piper’s anxiety and emotions all throughout the story.
As far as the plot in this book I also thought it seemed original as I’ve not read anything myself containing any type of gargoyle protector. There is a bit of insta-love but not what you would normally find in a young adult read. While Piper did find Gris attractive her personality was more concerned about him being a stranger and refusing to open up to him quickly. It wasn’t too long though the relationship progressed so I would still call it a “insta-love” in regards to that though but done in a way that fit Piper perfectly so I didn’t mind and in the end I rather enjoyed this story.

Hard Liquor
Blair Babylon
(Runaway Billionaires: Arthur Duet, #2)
Publication date: May 16th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
London trial lawyer Gen has managed to corral that randy colt His Lordship Arthur Finch-Hatten, the Earl of Severn, at least as far as anyone knows. In public, he seems to be behaving himself, but she’s kind of gotten involved with her client in a way that the Bar’s Ethics Committee would totally not approve of. With Arthur’s impending trial in the House of Lords and the constant backstabbing in her law office, the last thing Gen needs is for Arthur to whisk her off to Paris for the social wedding of the century to schmooze the people who will decide his fate.
Gen has broken all the rules, and she could very well end up with a broken heart.
She needs a stiff drink, and it had better be hard liquor.
Hard Liquor is the exciting conclusion to the Arthur Duet that begins with Stiff Drink.

EXCERPT:
Arthur stood in the opening of the front doors, framed by the light behind him and the imposing edifice of Spencer House, waving as the last guest’s car skidded on the tiled driveway around the fountain and drove off into the night. Exhaust from the cars fouled the spring breeze, but it blew out over the formal gardens and into the deer park within minutes, leaving only the stars, his estate, and his arm around the softness that was Gen.
“Come inside,” Arthur said. “You don’t want to catch a chill, pet.”
“Oh, is it ‘pet’ now?” Gen turned, brushing against his side, and walked ahead of him into the foyer.
When she turned back, the chandelier above was shining on her lustrous hair, her dark eyes were flirting with him, and that emerald silk dress had been poured over her curves.
Arthur lost his breath. “Gen.”
“Yes, sugar?” She was still smiling at him.
He slammed the door and was across the floor before he knew it and grabbed her.
“Arthur! There are people—”
“No, there aren’t.” The guests had all departed, and the staff would be cleaning up the dining room in the far wing of the house.
He lifted her in his arms, tossing her a little to show that he could indeed carry her wherever he wanted to, and strode up the stairs.
“Arthur, where are we—” She was giggling so hard that she couldn’t talk.
“Upstairs,” he said. He tried to make it light, amusing, but it came out like a growl. His voice felt deeper in his throat.
“What did that man say to you at dinner?”
“No matter.” He didn’t want to talk about Lord Asshole. “Tell me no if you don’t want this. Tell me no or amber or red.”
And it would rip him apart, but he would stop himself.
He whispered, “Tell me amber or red or put yourself in my hands.”
Gen wrapped her sweet arms around his neck, and she buried her face in his neck, kissing his skin above his collar.
Fire and testosterone raced through his veins.
She whispered, “I’m in your hands.”
Arthur walked faster, taking the stairs quickly.
