(Notus Motorcycle Club, #1)
Publication date: May 30th 2017
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense

Identical twin sisters move to St. John’s, Oregon, buy Vavoom’s Bar, and purposely put themselves into the path of Notus Motorcycle Club.

Burdened by a deep, dark secret, Clara has to be careful because one wrong step, one wrong word, could land her and Gracie in prison. Her need to stay close to the motorcycle club members backfire when Wayne Shaw throws her heart into a tailspin. There is more to the possessive biker than she originally thought. Cornered and out of options, she can only go forward and hope Wayne protects her.

Wayne Shaw splits his time between working at Port Loaders, searching for missing persons in partnership with the local police department, and keeping Notus Motorcycle Club together in hopes a brother will come home. Skilled at finding clues normal people miss, he has no trouble telling the new owners of Vavoom’s apart. He only wants Clara.

When a little girl goes missing, followed by a teenager disappearing, Wayne’s need to keep Clara safe while searching for a serial killer gets tested…until he’s no longer sure who is the hunted and who is the hunter.

EXCERPT:

Wayne placed the dishes in the sink, shut off the lights, and guided her to the stairs. Halfway up the steps, he stopped. “Kings of Leon.”

“What?”

He looked at her. “The group that does the song you were humming. Sex on Fire.”

She laughed and smacked his arm. “No way.”

“Swear it.” He kissed her quickly and chuckled.

She shook with laughter all the way to his bedroom. Never in her wildest dreams had she imagined Wayne, president of Notus MC, teasing her or so fun to be around. The normal awkwardness of first-time sex with another person never showed up. Everything that had to do with him seemed almost too perfect.

A phone beeped in Wayne’s back pocket, and two seconds later the doorbell rang. She dropped his hand and stood beside the bed.

“Hang on a second. I need to answer the door.” He kept his eyes on the screen of his phone and walked out of the room.

She followed him to the bedroom doorway and stopped. He’d gone downstairs.

In her sight, Wayne opened the front door at the bottom of the stairs. Glen walked inside. Clara stepped back planning to crawl into bed and give Wayne privacy when Glen said, “A girl is missing.”

A chill crawled up her spine. She stepped forward, staying out of sight.

Part of the Silence by Debbie Howells

Part of the SilencePart of the Silence by Debbie Howells
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When Evie Sherman is found beaten and left for dead in the small town of Cornwall where crime just doesn’t happen the police are doing everything in their power to find out what happened. News reports are ran looking for anyone who may have known Evie because when she awoke in the hospital the only thing Evie could remember was her own name and that her daughter was missing.

A local woman named Charlotte hears of Evie’s attack and thinks that she recognizes her from her younger days but not as Evie, as Jen. They hadn’t been close friends but Charlotte remembers Jen because she had made headlines when a child in her care had disappeared never to be found again. Charlotte contacts the police and becomes a link to Jen’s past to try to regain her memories.

Part of the Silence was another completely engaging thriller from author Debbie Howells. Within pages of this story I found myself hooked in and wanting to know more. Was there a missing girl or was Evie/Jen confused with her memory loss? The story is told in multiple POVs and a few flashback scenes added in here and there but never once found it confusing, on the contrary it was very easy to follow and become engrossed in the story.

My only reason for rating this one at four stars is due to my ability to guess early on who to be aware of in the book. I’d truly hoped I’d be wrong but even without an extra twisty ending to shock me I still enjoyed reading the story and know that I’ll still be a fan of Debbie Howells and look forward to reading her next thriller.

place to crash for as long as it takes. And the woman needs his help.

Sarah stumbled into the now dark living room, and found Matt lying on the couch, Shackles curled up at his feet. Through the sliver of moonlight shining through the window, she could make out that he had his shirt off, a pillow over his face. As if she’d given him a headache.

Wait until she got going. “Matt.”

Under his pillow, she heard him groan.

“What’s going on here?” She stood hands on hips and then decided that looked too accusatory for seduction, so she relaxed her arms at her sides.

“Go to sleep, Sarah.”

“No.”

He lifted the pillow from his face, one eye open. “I don’t want to argue with you.” “I don’t want to argue, either. I just want you to tell me what happened tonight.”

“Guess if you don’t know, I must not have done it right.”

“You did everything right.” Her voice softened. Now that she faced this—thing—between them her mouth was parched and dry. But she couldn’t lose her nerve now. “The only thing you did wrong was stop.”

“Wasn’t my choice.”

“But now it is.”

He didn’t move. “Go to sleep. Please.”

“Well, since you said please.”

“Seriously? That’s all it takes?”

“No. I lied. I’ll go to sleep, but not until you hear me out. I might be Stone’s sister, but I’m also a grown woman and I know what I want.”

“What do you want? Because I thought you wanted to fix this house and flip it. Sell it so you can get back to Colorado.”

Couldn’t a woman want more than one thing? “I want you, Matt. That’s what I want.”

“Do you? Be careful what you’re asking for. Maybe you don’t know me as well as you think you do.”

“I know enough. I know you’re one of the good guys.”

He snorted. “Yeah.”

“Do you think I’m going to fall in love with you? Is that it? Because that’s not an issue. I don’t believe in love.”

At that he removed the pillow from his head. “You don’t believe in love.”

“Does that shock you? Why should it? I grew up as the child of a broken home and I’ve seen more divorces around me than I care to remember. You of all people should understand.”

“Me of all people?”

“You’re also from a broken home. And…you’re a single father.”

“That doesn’t mean I don’t believe in love. And I think it’s pretty messed up that you don’t, Sarah.”

“Okay. What do you want? Is it me at all? Because a couple of hours ago you had me pretty well convinced, so if you’ve changed your mind you need to tell me now.”

There. She couldn’t believe she’d let all her thoughts spill out at last. Everything she’d intended to tell him for months had come pouring out of her lips, like the semidark of the room had given her added courage. In the ensuing quiet Sarah didn’t think he would answer her at all. Worse, in the dark of the room she couldn’t take a cue from his usually expressive eyes.

“I want you, Sarah.” He finally spoke, the sound of his voice so naked and raw that Sarah’s knees went boneless.

Corliss (The Girls of Spindrift, #1) by V.C. Andrews

Corliss (The Girls of Spindrift, #1)Corliss by V.C. Andrews
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Corliss is a high school student that learned early on in life that she was considered a genius and way ahead of her peers and most adults intelligently. This however causes problems with the other students at her school with their constant teasing and tormenting.

When Corliss is cornered and offered drugs by a group of girls at her school she refuses listing off the side effects and possible outcomes of unknown drugs. This of course leads the girls to more teasing and eventually they find a way to spike Corliss’s punch with the drugs landing her in the hospital and changing her look on life.

Corliss is the first book of the Girls of Spindrift series by V.C. Andrews. The series is a set of novellas that are prequels to the book Bittersweet Dreams which has already been published. I have not yet read Bittersweet Dreams myself but I don’t believe it would necessary to have done so to understand this novella, it seems to be mainly some character building for what would be coming in Bittersweet Dreams.

The story of Corliss was an OK one but with this one being novella length I think it suffered a bit with things not being expanded on more. I understood what the author was trying to go for with building up Corliss character with what happened to her but it all seemed so rushed that some actions become a bit questionable and perhaps not very realistic. It did however make me curious to read Bittersweet Dreams to see whatever happens to Corliss in her future.
