Title: Six Feet Deep Dish
Author: Mindy Quigley
Publisher: St. Martin’s Paperbacks
Publication Date: August 23, 2022
Page Count: 311
My rating: 4 stars
About the book:
Fresh mozzarella, tangy tomato sauce, and murder: the perfect recipe for a delicious first entry in Mindy Quigley’s Six Feet Deep Dish, a delectable new series…
Delilah O’Leary can’t wait to open her new gourmet deep-dish pizzeria in Geneva Bay, Wisconsin—a charming resort town with a long history as a mobsters’ hideaway, millionaires’ playground, and vacation mecca. Engaged to a hunk with a hefty trust fund, Delilah is poised to begin a life that’s just about as delicious as one of her cheesy creations.
Just before opening night, though, Delilah’s plans for pizza perfection hit the skids when her fiancé dumps her and leaves her with a very large memento from their relationship—Butterball, their spoiled, plus-sized tabby cat.
Delilah’s trouble deepens when she discovers a dead body and finds her elderly aunt holding the murder weapon. Handsome local police detective Calvin Capone, great grandson of the legendary gangster, opens an investigation, threatening to sink Delilah’s pie-in-the-sky ambitions before they can even get off the ground. To save her aunt and get her pizza place generating some dough, Delilah must deliver the real killer.
Six Feet Deep Dish by Mindy Quigley is the first book in the cozy Deep Dish Mysteries series. As with most cozy mystery series each book of the Deep Dish Mysteries will contain it’s own mystery that will be fully solved so they could be read as a standalone if choosing to do so. Of course the character development in each book will be carrying over to the next book for those wanting to continue the series.
Delilah O’Leary thought she was going to finally have it all once she opened up her new deep dish pizzeria in Geneva Bay, Wisconsin. Geneva Bay was the perfect touristy town that should make her business a success and she had everyone she loved around her, her fiance and her great-aunt Biz and Butterball her tabby cat. Things don’t always go as planned though and Delilah quickly learned that as her restaurant opened.
First Delilah finds out that her fiance no longer wants to marry her which leaves the problem of her funding as he was paying for their home and her business. Then just as the restaurant opens Delilah finds the body of her Aunt Biz’s caretaker, Jeremy. Biz had been complaining he wasn’t around but finding her holding the murder weapon Delilah is sure that her aunt had nothing to do with the murder and vows to help find who did.
Six Feet Deep Dish by Mindy Quigley was one of those stories that certainly did have a lot going on in it as soon as it began. I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this first book which included some things I always look for with some quirkiness and humor, oh and a furry sidekick too. The setting being an old mobsters’ hideaway led to the detective being a descendant of a famous mobster which also gave a bit of flavor so to speak to the story with plenty of twists along the way too.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

EXCERPT:
I’d heard tales that vampires had an uncanny ability to beguile their prey. Their attractive faces and bewitching scent, partnered with their commanding voices entranced victims, making them do whatever was asked of them.
He must be using the same supernatural powers to captivate me. Despite his effort, I prevailed and pushed the horrendous thought to the far recesses of my mind.
“Never in peace.” He growled, his hot breath fanned the shell of my ear. “You are my enemy.”
“Fine. You want to die here, right now?” I gritted the words through my teeth as I slowly released my feathers, my chest rising and falling just as fast as his.
He made the mistake of pulling back just enough for his eyes to lock with mine. I pushed off with the strength of my feathers, taking him with me. His back thumped the opposite wall and I trapped him with my body and wings.
Victus’s eyes grew wide, stunned. With an ear-piercing snarl, his feet tangled with mine to launch us into a wild spin, and then he pushed me against the wall with such force that all of the air was knocked from my lungs with an oomph.
“I loathe your kind,” he hissed, baring his teeth.
“And I despise everything about you.” I clenched my jaw.
“My hatred for you is greater.” The tendrils under his eyes throbbed.
We were thrown into a battle of push and shove, taking turns on who would be on top of our chaotic tumbling until we eventually stopped at the opposite end of the room, panting.
With my back to the wall, he took a fistful of my hair and yanked my head to the side, exposing my neck. His hot breath and his sharp fangs grazed down my skin.
I shuddered and every vein in my body seared. I wasn’t sure if it was from fear or from the heated tussle and our bodies colliding.
“If you believe I’m your enemy, then bite me.” I took a chance by saying the latter. Since he found me revolting, he would likely release me.
He gripped my hair tighter and snarled

Title: Lost to Dune Road
Author: Kara Thomas
Publisher: Thomas & Mercer
Publication Date: April 16, 2024
Page Count: 333
My rating: 3 1/2 stars
About the book:
For a disgraced reporter, unraveling a conspiracy of murder could mean redemption in a powerful novel of suspense by the bestselling author of Out of the Ashes.
Reporter Lee Ellerin’s investigation into a young woman’s unsolved murder gained national attention—only for her to lose everything due to a tragic mistake. After being publicly ridiculed for causing a suspect’s death, Lee is forced to leave her career behind.
Five years later, pregnant college student Amanda Hartley lies in a coma. The police say she attempted suicide, but the details don’t add up. Where is the father? Who was paying for Amanda’s Manhattan penthouse? Why did Amanda have a note with Lee’s name in her backpack? There’s also one alarming coincidence: Amanda was last seen on Dune Road in the Hamptons—where the murder victim in Lee’s previous investigation disappeared.
As she’s pulled back into the still-unsolved case that destroyed her career, Lee sees the chance to amend the mistakes of her past. But finding a killer and unearthing Amanda’s secrets sends her down a darker path than she has ever walked before.
Lost to Dune Road by Kara Thomas is a crime thriller novel with a private detective at the lead. The story in Lost to Dune Road is one that is told mainly from the point of view of the main characters but does occasionally switch to another point of view with some flashing back to previous events.
Lee Ellerin had once been in her dream career of being a investagative reporter when things came crashing down for Lee. Working on a case that had gained national attention of a young woman’s unsolved murder Lee made a huge mistake and it cost her her journalism career.
Now five years later Lee has become a private investigator when she is contacted by the mother of yet another victim. Amanda Hartley is pregnant and in a coma after what was initially thought to be a suicide but Lee’s name was found in Amanda’s things even though Lee doesn’t seem to know her and with that connection Lee can’t help but dive into this new case as memories of the old haunt her.
Lost to Dune Road is not the first book I’ve read by author Kara Thomas so I went in expecting to absolutely love this one. Unfortunately that wasn’t so much the case with finishing at three and a half stars but it was still a solid story. I think for me this one was a case of just a little too much being added into the mix that I felt like it was kind of convoluted without really needing to be with a lot of characters tossed into the mix. The story was dark and one that drew me in and perhaps with a little less involved it would have been a total hit.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Title: An Enchanting Case of Spirits
Author: Melissa Holtz
Publisher: Berkley
Publication Date: April 9, 2024
Page Count: 363
My rating: 4 stars
About the book:
When a fortieth birthday celebration leads to a ghostly visitor, four friends find themselves navigating surprising mysteries and spiritual hijinks, in this clever debut from Melissa Holtz.
Alyssa Mann isn’t adventurous, not since her husband died and she found herself the single mom of a teenage daughter. But there’s no way to avoid celebrating the big 4-0, so when her best friends drag her out for drinks and a tarot reading, she throws caution to the wind and decides to see what the spirits have to say. It’s all fun and games, until she wakes up the next morning with a wicked hangover—and a ghost perched on the edge of her bed.
Sheer panic sends her running to get help from Nick West, the (very attractive) detective who lives next door. When he finds no one inside, Alyssa has to accept that she really did see a ghost. As the dearly departed keep appearing, Alyssa and her friends do their best to learn how to control her newfound power. Trading insults with ghosts, tracking down family heirlooms, and getting closer to the skeptical but helpful Nick is more fun than Alyssa imagined. But when looking into one ghost’s past reveals unexpected—and unwelcome—facts about Alyssa’s late husband’s death, she discovers she just may be in over her head.
An Enchanting Case of Spirits by Melissa Holtz is somewhat of a romantic paranormal fantasy with a heaping side of mystery. The story in An Enchanting Case of Spirits is one that does change the point of view between the characters with a friends (neighbors) to lovers slow burn romance.
Alyssa Mann has been in mourning since her husband died in a horrible accident but Alyssa’s friends really want to see her get back to normal and have a little fun for a change. When Alyssa’s friends suggest going to a tarot reading to celebrate her big 4-0 Alyssa figures what the heck, nothing will probably happen but just what if she could contact her husband?
Alyssa ends up getting more than she expected at the tarot reader but still ends up disappointed when heading home. The next morning however Alyssa wakes to a strange man in her room that poofed away when confronted. In complete shock and terror Alyssa runs to her neighbor, Nick West, who happens to be a detective and is happy to help but Nick never expected to be investigating a ghost though.
An Enchanting Case of Spirits is a debut novel from author Melissa Holtz so of course I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this one. Thankfully what I found was a fun story that kept the pages turning all throughout. I do think that this one was a little heavier on the mystery side of the novel than the romance but I didn’t mind at all. I enjoyed the side of ghosts this one offered up just as much as the main characters and when finished I would definitely give this author another try if she writes more in the future.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
