About the book:
One woman takes the vacation of a lifetime in this poignant and heartwarming story about the threads that hold a family together from #1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery.
Single mom Robyn Caldwell needs a new plan for her future. She has always put her family first. Now, with her kids grown, she yearns for a change. But what can she do when her daughter has become the most demanding bride ever, her son won’t even consider college, her best friend is on the brink of marital disaster and her ex is making a monumentally bad decision that could ruin everything?
Take a vacation, of course. Press reset. When her great-aunt Lillian invites her to Santa Barbara for the summer, Robyn hops on the first plane to sunny California.
But it’s hard to get away when you’re the heart of the family. One by one, everyone she loves follows her across the country. Somehow, their baggage doesn’t feel as heavy in the sun-drenched, mishmash mansion. The more time Robyn spends with free-spirited Lillian, the more possibilities she sees—for dreams, love, family. She can have everything she ever wanted, if only she can muster the courage to take a chance on herself.
The Summer Getaway by Susan Mallery is a women’s fiction title that has some romance with a whole lot of family drama. The story in The Summer Getaway is one that is told by changing the point of view between the characters giving all sides to the story.
It’s been four years since Robyn Caldwell’s divorce and Robyn has come to a realization that she needs a plan for the rest of her life after the divorce settlement runs out. The only thing standing in Robyn’s way of figuring out her own future, handling everyone else’s troubles all around her before she can begin to tackle her own.
Robyn’s son has just graduated high school and refuses to go to college. Robyn’s older daughter did make it through college but wants to marry her boyfriend despite Robyn’s protests of not knowing him well enough but she also wants this in the family’s backyard of the home Robyn needs to sell. Robyn’s bestie is contemplating a fling all the while knowing Robyn hates cheating after her own husband’s infidelity. In the midst of all the chaos Robyn heads out to the west coast to stay with her aunt hoping for a break.
The Summer Getaway by Susan Mallery is one of those books that I felt I needed to tackle with a bowl of popcorn nearby while diving into all the drama. There certainly was a lot going on in the story that kept the pages turning trying to sort out all of the mess Robyn’s friends and family seemed to bring into her life. There were chuckles and heartwarming moments and moments of pain but all of it wrapped up together nicely to make a great story to read.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

With compassion and humor, Susan keenly observes how people think and feel, in stories that take readers on an emotional journey. Sometimes heartbreaking, often funny, and always uplifting, Susan’s books have spent more than 200 weeks on the USA Today bestsellers list, thanks to her ever growing legions of fans.
Critics, too, have heaped praise on “the new queen of romantic fiction.” (Walmart) Booklist says, “Romance novels don’t get much better than Mallery’s expert blend of emotional nuance, humor, and superb storytelling,” and RT Book Reviews puts her “in a class by herself!”
Although Susan majored in Accounting, she never worked as an accountant because she was published straight out of college with two books the same month. Sixteen prolific years and seventy-four books later, she hit the New York Times bestsellers list for the first time with Accidentally Yours in 2008. She made many appearances in the Top 10 before (finally) hitting #1 in 2015 with Thrill Me, the twentieth book in her popular series, the Fool’s Gold romances, and the fourth of five books released that year.
Susan lives in Seattle with her husband, a ragdoll cat, and a small poodle with delusions of grandeur. Her heart for animals has led Susan to become an active supporter of the Seattle Humane Society. Animals play a big role in her books, as well, as she believes they’re an integral component to a happy life. Visit Susan online at http://www.SusanMallery.com.
