About the book:

How do you start a new chapter of your life when you haven’t closed the book on the previous one?

Eighteen months ago, Autumn Divac’s husband went missing. Her desperate search has yielded no answers, and she can’t imagine moving forward without him. But for the sake of their two teenage children, she has to try.

Autumn takes her kids home for the summer to the charming beachside town where she was raised. She seeks comfort working alongside her mother and aunt at their bookshop, only to learn that her daughter is facing a huge life change and her mother has been hiding a terrible secret for years. And when she runs into the boy who stole her heart in high school, old feelings start to bubble up again. Is she free to love him, or should she hold out hope for her husband’s return? She can only trust her heart…and hope it won’t lead her astray.

The Bookstore on the Beach by Brenda Novak is a contemporary romance with a bit of mystery on the side. This one is a standalone from the author who has several long running series. Having read several books by Brenda Novak in the past I was quite excited to get to read this one and knew I’d be in for an exciting ride.

Autumn Divac had been happily married for a number of years to a loving husband and a mother to two wonderful children. That happy family life came to a crashing halt when Autumn’s husband had left for business to never return. Now eighteen months later Autumn is exhausted from following leads to only find a dead end in learning the whereabouts of her missing husband with every sign pointing to him not having survived.

Autumn knows that not only for the sake of her two teenage children but for her own mental health she needs to begin to move on and let go of the past. Autumn decides her best bet would be to pack up her children and head to her childhood home for the summer to visit family and clear her head. When Autumn comes across her old high school crush she remembers those old feelings and wonders if she could move on.

One thing I know will come with a novel from this author is solid writing that will pull a reader into the story and that was just what I found with The Bookstore on the Beach. I couldn’t help but feel for Autumn and her whole family as I learned of their past and where they were in their lives. I also love a good second chance story and that is what you found with this one too. I wasn’t quite sure if I would’ve included the twist at the end myself so this one wasn’t quite five stars this time but I still enjoyed it all the same.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak’s career as a bestselling author–she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.

“When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book,” Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists and won many awards, including eight Rita nominations, the Book Buyer’s Best, the Book Seller’s Best, the Silver Bullet and the National Reader’s Choice Award.

Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children–three girls and two boys. When she’s not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising funds for diabetes research (her youngest son has this disease). So far, Brenda has raised $2.6 million!

  1. Nice review. I loved this story as well. The mystery and the new beginnings were both quite entertaining. I wanted an epilogue and she wrote one that she sent out to people who are on her email list. Did you get it Carrie?
